#22065 — Ignore Thread notification

FromUdo Steinbach <trashcan@udoline.de>
Date2026-09-22 22:02 +0200
SubjectIgnore Thread notification
Message-ID<118umso$15kdo$1@dont-email.me>
Oh man…
After every ignored thread, Betterbird (I think: Thunderbird) displays an
information bar at the bottom of the thread pane. I understand the
intention: accidentally pressing K can be confusing, and providing an Undo
option can be useful.
The problem is the way this has been implemented.
1: The notification appears inside the posting list.
2: It covers several postings at the bottom of the list.
3: It remains there when I continue working with non-ignored threads.
4: As a result, the covered part of the posting list is no longer usable
for its intended purpose. I have to either close the notification or
simply accept that part of my message list is obstructed.
5: There is no keyboard shortcut to dismiss it. I performed the action
using the keyboard; I am then forced to reach for the mouse just to
    restore my normal working area.
6: This happens again after every ignored thread.

This is particularly unfortunate because the underlying problem is
perfectly legitimate: a user who accidentally presses K should have a way
to understand what happened and undo it. But that does not require
permanently occupying part of the message list after every intentional use
of the command. A much less intrusive solution would be to provide the
same way every program does on Delete Something: Show Messagebox with
„Don't show again“ checkbox.

Why do I get the feeling that software developers don't actually look at
the results of their own work…

I've always thought they never use the product they are developing. Not in an honest 24/7
usage.

Who do you mean, Thunderbird developers or global?

Many, really many shitty things in software can be spotted at first glance.
With open eyes and minimum of brain activity.
Example: What I have written.
Example: Thunderbird again, collecting RSS. Showing an error on an URL for a
second in the status bar is obviously useless. A 4-year-old would know it
without even seeing it.
Example: Useless or incomplete error messages in all programs.

I've raised it before here (yes, it applies in TB too) - especially 2
(covers several lines) and 5 (no keyboard dismiss). Several versions
ago; it's obviously being ignored.

Not sure I'd agree there - a way to undo an accidental use is always
useful. Which wouldn't be intrusive if there was a keyboard way of
saying "OK" (_or_ "oops").>

As I thought.

Whatever. But to choose one of Top 3 of the badest thinkable ways…

mentioning something here is definitely not a way to have the developers
look at it ...

I hoped to collect some voices here to raise a little pressure to repair
this. A one-man-show can easily wiped away.

I understand, but even a dozen voices here saying "me too" have no way
to be heard by the TB devs. Wayne or welpy-cw may poke their heads here
once in a while ...

I take your point, but I agree with Udo's one too; also, it could be
argued that this isn't actually a bug, just an undesirable feature; I'm
sure it works how its designers intended.

(Nevertheless, I've starred your post with the link to the reporting
portal.)

Anybody can garble quotations like that -- even with the Bible... Er...
"And he went and hanged himself (Matthew 27:5). Go, and do thou
likewise (Luke 10:37)."
