Used update 153.3 bb9 as I usually do with updates (with Betterbird
closed)
It did not reopen as it usually does.
Then discovered that it had deleted/uninstalled itself.
Fortunately it didn't delete the profile so using the same installer it
recovered to where it was before except as 153.3.

I too updated to bb9 with the bird closed and did not experience this.

If he is running Windows 10/11, he may be experience their
notorious "one off" problems, where no on else in the world
has the issue. Because of it, I have to figure out the fix
them all by myself because no one else has posted on it.
I constantly trip across them.

You can try your LLM-AI for that. with no guarantees
the symptom set has been added to the training set yet.

With no instruction manual, you're on your own when figuring
out how to phrase a question.

The result in this case (bombing out half way through a
sequence), isn't that hard to understand. All it would take,
is some error condition during the removal of the old version,
to do that. Then, you'd want to find a log where it was working,
to see if there is a log entry. And preferably, before trying
to run the installer a second time.

It could even be an interaction with Windows Defender. Like
if you have Anti-Tampering enabled or something.

You can run Process Monitor procmon.exe from Sysinternals
during an install, to capture all the file handles used during
the install. From that, you may find where it does its logging.

Another possibility, is you're not installing in C:\Program Files
and you're installing on D: and you're one of those people :-)
I suppose the NSIS installer tolerates that. Maybe the paths encoded
in the installer, don't take that possibility into account.

I run across that all the time. They have a D drive and they
think they can separate things. Oh NONNONONONO. The programmer
may catch it a few times in the installer but they wind up with
somethings on D and most of it on C.

Just buy a bugger hard drive!!!!

I gave up trying to separate OS, prog.s, and data somewhere around
'98/XP - basically, when prog.s started scattering bits of themselves
all over the place, and replaced .ini files with the abomination that is
the registry. (A good idea for things common across lots of software.
Not as a place for everything.) You soon fins it's a losing battle. It's
also easier to backup/image everything, so in the event of failure you
can restore everything back how you had it in just however long it takes
to just restore an image - no need to re-install, and then configure,
everything individually (even if you remember how to do those elusive
settings).

It _does_ make some sense, IMO, to have a separate drive/partition for
your _data_ (including installer files); apart from anything else a
different backup regime can be used, as it tends not to be scattered all
over the place.

The practice occurred years ago when drives were very small.
I was the only way to get more drive space.

I actually did this to a customer about ten years go when
the only NVMe drive I could be a hod of was really small.
So I put his Documents, Music, Pictures over on D.
Ie had about 300GB in those directories. It worked.

Now that drives are large, the problem occurs:
    C: 95% full
    D: 5% full
All it does it cause problems now-a-days.

I also combine "/" (root) and /home together on
Linux system. Vastly reduces the stress.

Anybody know where I can get an English version download of 153.2?
I am experiencing delays a little longer than usual in waiting for
server for both mail and news. I don't keep the install packages after
install and almost always immediately delete them. I would like to try
going back a version or two to see if this clears up. The only one I
found is on one of the BBird sites, but is in german language. Anyone?

Here:
https://www.betterbird.eu/downloads/

Scroll down to:
'Downloads per file'
Open the folder 'Windows Installer'
Choose the version you want.

Thanks, Matthias. I missed that and they are all there. I have changed
over and initially feels better, but I'll know more if for me 153.3 is
causing the problems or if it is my system in a few hours.

This will be a test start as it was taking me about 10 seconds to get a
message sent like the post you responded to.

crappy on all versions now (just dealing with email and usenet), so it
must be something in my windows right now
