#21594 — "system integration" - news?

I just let TB upgrade itself from what I had to "153.0.1esr (64-bit)";
it said it needed to do a restart (it meant of itself, not Windows), so
I let it. When it did, the TB window had appeared, over which a new
smaller window popped up, saying something like "use Thunderbird as the
default for", with tickboxes for mail, news, feed, and I think one or
two others.

Mail was already ticked, news wasn't, and feeds was ticked but greyed
out. I just clicked "skip integration" - maybe it'll pop up again next
time I start TB. (I think it is new - I don't remember seeing it on
previous upgrades. No problem.)

I was just wondering - what would ticking news do? I can understand what
ticking mail does - it mean TB is used if I click a "mailto" link on a
webpage, and I think if I click a .eml file - but what about news? (What
does _not_ having that ticked do? I seem to be reading - and posting to
- news fine.)

register for usenet related URLs, but they're quite a rare beast e.g

<news://uk.tech.broadcast/>

and what may be valid on my chosen server (NIN) isn't valid on yours 
(ES) e.g. to point to the start of this thread

Thanks - I've ticked it anyway, as the popup does return every time I
start TB.

IMO it's rather poorly designed:

1. It has tickboxes for mail, news, something else I've forgotten
already, and calendar - but the buttons at the bottom are only "set as
default" and "skip integration". The latter just makes it come up every
time I start TB, but "set as default" doesn't seem the right label since
you can choose whether it is for the four categoties: "save my choices"
or something like that would IMO be better wording.

2. Like all such things that only pop-up once (if you accept them),
there's always the concern "how do I change my mind later" (as in "how
do I find the settings this is presenting to [concealing from] me").

In this case, it's not particularly hidden

Tools > Settings > General > System Integration > Check Now

Thanks.

Although there it's to the right of "Always check to see if Thunderbird
is the default mail client on startup", which to me isn't intuitive as a
way of seeing if it's the default news, feeds, or calendar client.

Anyway, I tried clicking on it, and the same System Integration box
popped up - but with all the boxes other than Calendar (a) ticked and
(b) greyed out, so I can't chamge them if I want to.

I'm not that bothered, but also not impressed!

Look out for #1. Don't step in #2 either.
