#21188 — changing 'view' to unthreaded

Is there any way to change the default View | Sort by from Threaded to Unthreaded? The only things I
want to see threaded are the newsgroup posts.

As you said, it is in the View menu; Sort by. Alt-V-S-T or H

Threaded is the default; I prefer unthreaded. Always.

On my system, once I've changed to unthreaded, it stays changed. If you
are sometimes using threaded and sometimes not, then you will have to
flip it.

I use sticky keys, so a modifier followed by other keys is easy.

Betterbird remembers whether each folder was set to threaded or
unthreaded, as well as the sort order. Does Thunderbird not remember
that?

The responses here have said that once a folder is changed, it stays changed. That's not my issue. I
have a lot of folders and a lot of subfolders that I've been organizing, and it's tedious making the
change from Threaded to Unthreaded everywhere. For example, I've found that changing the view to
Unthreaded at the main folder does not change the view to Unthreaded for its subfolders, so I have
to do them one at a time.

That's why I wondered if it was possible to make Unthreaded the default. If Unthreaded were the
default, then I would change to Threaded in only the newsgroups.

Looks like it's not possible though.

It *is* possible ...

Set the view of one group to be as you want your default view to be
(sort order/unthreaded/unread/whatever)

In top right of the header of the message list pane, there is a "grid"
icon, right-click on that
[the following steps feel awkward because the menu cascades to the left]
choose "apply current view to..."
choose "folder and its children"
choose your news server
choose the top-level of your news server again

It will ask you to confirm you want to apply the current view to the
news server and all its children, so click OK

... BUT ...

your joy will be short lived, because before too long something will
cause the view settings to get undone :-(

Interestingly (maybe...) what I think Jo-Anne wants is how I have my TB
(now nagging to be 152.0.1 I note) set up. My mail accounts launch as
unthreaded... while E-S's groups are threaded.

Contrarily, mine have held for likely years.

Maybe the threaded/unthreaded setting does stick, but the sort-order
usually doesn't stick for me ...

Sort of. <g> I have a habitual accident/accidental habit for some
reason of hitting "Date" at the top right of the msg pane, and
screwing things up.

There is an add-on that's supposed to block that, I haven't tested it:

I did what you said, Andy (for the folders in Local Folders, since the newsgroups are OK as
threaded), but nothing has changed. I closed Thunderbird and opened it again, and still the only
folders that were changed from threaded to unthreaded were the ones I did manually for each folder.

Your suggestion should have worked, and I thank you for offering it.

My mistake! I didn't take it far enough. Today I tried again, and this time it worked. Thank you
very much!
