They also exist in Spain, and are named "paso de cebra"
However, here the naming is not strict: even if the painting doesn't
look like a zebra they can be called a zebra crossing.

They sometimes also have metal studs set into the road along their edges; this gives rise to the French word for them, "passage clouté", which means "nailed". Or so I think I was taught fortysomething years ago. -- J. P. Gilliver. I can recall, back in my School Days, say sixty years ago, in Australia we also had School Crossings which were two solid white lines going from one Kerb to the other ... usually associated with four (maybe) four foot high polls either corner painted with alternate Red and White stripes which might have 'held' flags stipulating 'School Crossing' on them. (If the flags weren't in place, they were so much roadway!!) 'Normal' Pedestrian Crossings were the 'Zebra Crossing' things with White blocks painted on the Black Bitumen. At a 'School Crossing' the vehicles HAD to remain stationary until the people had reached the other side f the road whereas, at a 'Pedestrian Crossing' the Vehicles only had to remain stationary whilst the people were in front of the Vehicle, sort of. > To me, a zebra crossing is broad alternating black and white stripes > (I'm not sure they always bother with the black if the road surface > is dark enough), at right angles to the direction of walking - the > most well-known example being the cover of the Beatles' Abbey Road > album.
