I have the setting for "To save disk sapce, do not download: messages larger than 75 KB." Sometimes when the message exceeds 75 KB and I request to download the entire message, I get a blank message. If I view the raw source -- [View > Message Source] -- I see that the message is truncated somewhere within the HTML body, that is within the text. I strongly suspect there is a non-standard character at that point, something inserted when the message was composed by a faulty HTML generator. This always seems to happen with messages from a particular sender, the car dealer where I have my car serviced. If I get such a message, I DO NOT request downloading the entire message. Instead, I use my browser and go to my ISP's webmail. There I select the message and request to export it as an .eml file. I can load the result into Thunderbird and read the entire message. -- David E. Maybe, forwarded, but otoh, she can't read my emails either and they are set to go both in text and html. And I used Eudora which doesn't even send utf-8. I sent her one email whose text was just No text . She got that, saw the two words on the tablet but not windows.

However, while e-mail clients that format in HTML should also include a plain text MIME part for the same message, many don't. When sending, you don't know the capabilities of the recipient's client. When using HTML, a text MIME part should be included should the recipient's client not support HTML, or they configured it to only show the text MIME part. However, just stripping out the HTML tags (which are text) from a message doesn't always give a best rendition in the text MIME part. So, if your client only displays the text MIME part and not the HTML MIME part, but the sender doesn't include a text MIME part, there is no MIME part from which to show the message. Some clients will try to interpret the HTML MIME part to show as text, but they could simply select which MIME part to show based on how you configured the client, so no text MIME part means no text message to show. As I recall, and when sending using HTML format, Tbird will include both the text and HTML MIME parts. Also look at View -> Message Body As menu. As I recall, the choices were: Original HTML: Displays HTML or plain text message as is. That is, it looks HTML MIME part, or shows the text MIME part if there is no HTML part. If there is an HTML MIME part, the text MIME part isn't displayed. Could be the text MIME part is okay, but the sender screwed up the HTML MIME part; i.e., the text MIME part has the message, but the HTML MIME part is empty. Plain text: Displays the text MIME part or the text body, but if absent will display the HTML MIME part (by stripping the HTML tags, not by using an interpretation). So, if there is only an HTML MIME part, maybe it is empty (comment fields are missing). Simple HTML: Will display the HTML MIME part, if present, but only handles basic HTML tags, Javascript is disabled (for safety, I would think that would be the default for ALL view modes), and doesn't display remote image (for safety, external content should always be blocked). Have her look at the raw source of the message. For any polite sender using HTML, there should be both a text MIME part and an HTML MIME part. If there is no text MIME part, the sender is using a crappy client. I've seen that happen more often when using webmail clients, or for bulk mails. Maybe the HTML part is empty or screwed up (e.g., missing end tags), and with the recipient's client configured to show the HTML rendition then that is what the recipient sees. If the raw source view shows text in the body of the e-mail, or a text MIME part, there would be the message *if* the sender included the text version of their message. Is it always the same sender that shows empty e-mails, or is it for every sender that uses HTML formatting? You don't say if the blank message problem is for every e-mail received from every sender, or with just one sender. You sure the problematic messages are not some boob's attempt to use e-mail as a file transfer protocol, like sending you huge-size message with attachments of videos? Tbird has a setting that limits downloads to a max message size. A typical e-mail might be 5KB to 35KB in size, but with videos attached, or lots of embedded pictures, the size can grow to huge. Even if it's not your client restricting the size of the download, the sender could be using a client that limits the size of their outbound messages, or their e-mail provider truncates their message (instead of rejecting it with an error message returned to their client). When sending huge attachments, senders should upload the file(s) to online storage, and provide a URL in their message that points to the image file. Just because they want to send it doesn't mean recipients want to waste the time to get the huge attachments (more bandwidth, more disk space, corruption more likely, and there is no resume function in e-mail). If their client or their provider is truncating the message, the ending delimiter line for a MIME part could be missing which then has that MIME part swallowing up a following MIME part.
