Have you got the quick-filter toolbar turned on? there are buttons (not 
icons) for unread/starred/with-attachment/from-contact there ...

Thanks very much. No I didn't, but I have it now. It's no exactly what I 
wanted, but it's close enough.

If you install the "Message Header Toolbar Customise" add-on (useful for 
other things) you can make them display as icons only, rather than 
buttons with icons+text.
