I just tested by using an email address in the Recipient field of a text
message and received it in my Thunderbird.

Still waiting for the reply from Thunderbird to my phone though.

I am not sure I understand what you are saying, I am able to send a text
message to a phone (XXXXXXXXXX@carrier.XX) but how does a phone
communicate with TB?

All I did was enter my email address for the Recipient. The message was
sent to my email address and received as being sent from my phone number.

Let me see if I understand you, using your phone you sent a text to your
email address and Thunderbird received the text on your computer.

Exactly!

Try it.

No guarantee it will work with all cell phone providers. It did with my
T-Mobile account.

I am curious how TB interpreted your SMS, did it have an email address?
Did it have your phone number?
I will try it, although ny phone has never been setup for email and has
never made an internet connection it does receive SMS texts.

I think that because the recipient was an email address and not a phone
number, it was gated to become an email message. Thunderbird itself isn't
an SMS client that I know of.

A phone number can be used as the recipient of an email message intended
to be received as SMS if one knows how the carrier translates its phone
numbers as email addresses, for there is no standard way to do that. But
that too is gated from email to SMS.

You need to use a special email address to have the phone retrieve it
as a text message, such as 666555444@mms.att.net. The domain part of
that address varies by cell-phone provider.

Google for "send text via email" (without quotes) and you'll find the
list; that's what I did.

Is it possible that your 'phones recognised the recipient as an email
address, and just sent an email?

Were the messages long enough to exceed the character limit on the Short
Messaging System?

No, that's not what happened.

No, it was a very short test message.

Thunderbird simply receives an E-Mail as any other "ordinary" E-Mail in
this situation; so it is not a speciality of Thunderbird - any E-Mail
client can do this.

The magic is on the mobile phone service side: it can transfer/convert a
SMS to an E-Mail message,

Surely the magic would be if you could send an SMS from Thunderbird to your
mobile.

Ask your carrier how to represent your phone number as an email address.

It's probably something like

	NXXNXXXXXX@[smsgatewayhost].yourtelephonecarrier.com

but it's proprietary to your carrier. You have to know both the phone
number and carrier to look up the email address syntax.

To send SMS via email to a T-Mobile subscriber:

	NXXNXXXXXX@@tmomail.com

SMS can be received by certain non-mobile telephone subscribers too. My VoIP
carrier allows me to receive SMS and will even forward them to email.

They've offered SMS for a year or so now. I access messages via the Web
interface, or they get forwarded to email.
