I am sure that must have been it but can't find anything. It would seem
a very important option, there often many screens full of quoted text to
scroll through.

Looks like a combined version of QuoteColors and QuoteCollapse may be
coming back for TB91

Just checked my addons and I have "Quote Colors" -notice the space- and
it is working fine.

There is a toggle switch to turn it on and off.

Tools -> Add Ons from the main page.

Presumably v2.x ?

I think it'd v3.x that claims it will include the quotecollapse

Yeah, that is why I top post!

Incidentally can the hot keys used by Tbird be changed so the old muscle
memory of Microsoft mail and news clients can continue to be used when this
old outlook express cannot work any more?

There used to be a couple of add-ons to remap keyboard shortcuts, but I
don't think they work with current versions of thunderbird.

If you top post, I have to scroll down to see what you are replying to,
then back up to see your reply.

Whether you top post, bottom post, or intersperse post is entirely up to
you, but as far as I'm concerned, top-posters are a nuisance, and
quickly get killfiled here.

Moreover your top top-posting puts your signature after your reply so
everything you had quoted gets deleted in my reply.

I can remember all the arguments about top posting ten or twenty years
ago! Usually the main problem is people who quote far too much.

I think a lot of it went back to the days when most USENET users were
academic ones and some rather resented 'ordinary' users. :-)

I wondered if they were used to the days when everything was printed out
(they were not paying for the paper of course!).

Overquoting is a separate issue. After all, not choosing what's
necessary to retain context in quoted remark has nothing to do with
posting in followup above, intersperced, or below.

Top posting sucks for the obvious reason Ken Blake stated. English is
read top to bottom.

Yes! If replies only quoted the points being replied to, it would
usually not matter whether they were top-posted or bottom-posted.
Scrolling would seldom be needed.

Preserving logical reading order still matters.

No argument from me, but it matters much less if the quoted material and
the reply both fit on the screen.

So few of the discussions I participate in will fit on a single screen.
Even with proper trimming.

This message, as you trimmed it and I replied to it, fits on a single
screen.

Would it be worse if if my reply was top-posted?> Maybe slightly worse,
but it wouldn't be a big deal to me.

What I'm replying to would fit in a (new) tweet.

IMHO, Tweets aren't in and of themselves sufficient for actual honest to
$DEITY communications.

When you start getting into communications where someone takes more than
five minutes to type a reply chances are good that their message, much
less a sufficiently detailed response, will not fit on a number of
screens and will require scrolling. Especially if one or both parties
enforces hard line breaks between 70 and 80 characters.

> Would it be worse if if my reply was top-posted?

Definitely.

> Maybe slightly worse, but it wouldn't be a big deal to me.
More than slightly.

You're using English, so I'm going to assume that it's familiar to you.
As such, you are probably also familiar with the top to bottom flow of
normal English writing. You probably also realize that this is a
representation of chronological ""speech (of sorts).

With that in mind, I speculate that you would be disconcerted to hear
someone answer a question before the question was asked. Be it a time
jump or whatever. So ... why should textual representation of speech be
any different than the verbal form of speech?

Once you get beyond a certain length of email or discussion, there is a
sequence of multiple points. And it's quite common to give participants
the opportunity to respond to various points during the course of a
longer discussion. I view interspersing point with counter points to be
the same way. This is typically referred to in-line style.

I strongly prefer in-line style. Bottom posting does maintain
conversation chronology. -- As in someone new to the conversation, say
reading a newsgroup / mailing list archive. -- Can read from the start
at the top to the end at the bottom in one pass and likely not be confused.

Aside: I view "but my client does $THIS automaticaly" comments to be an
excuse at best. Also, the size and popularity of the institution that
creates a tool to do something does not speak to it's properness, rather
simply nods to it's likely probability.
