I cannot get Thunderbird to be my default email client on Windows 10.
It does not even appear on the list of available options in Control Panel.

Try re-install, there was a MAPI issue a few versions back, no need to 
uninstall first, just re-install.

I don't think you need to use Windows Control Panel. I Thunderbird, 
Tools » Options » Advanced » General and under System Integration 
click the "Check Now ..." button.

That had not worked before I first posted.
The re-install over the existing did.
