I cannot get Thunderbird to be my default email client on Windows 10. It does not even appear on the list of available options in Control Panel. -- Jim S

I don't think you need to use Windows Control Panel. I Thunderbird,
Tools » Options » Advanced » General and under System Integration
click the "Check Now ..." button.
