#79 — Mulitple *.dat files

I have a weird problem with the files in my Thunderbird newsgroup
folder. Since I subscribed to the new Mozilla groups within alt.* (the
first ones from alt.* which I subscribed to) their dat-files get
duplicated over and over as follows:

alt.comp.software.firefox.dat
alt.comp.software.firefox-1.dat
alt.comp.software.firefox-2.dat

This is not specific to these groups; the same happens also with other
groups from alt.*, which I just tested for confirmation.

The folder is included in Dropbox, and I understand, that this could
have some side-effects, when Dropbox replicates while (in this case)
Thunderbird is active.

However, this folder has been in Dropbox for many years, and I never
have had such a problem with any of my other groups from de.*

If is matters, I am subscribed to new.individual.de.

Although I post this here, I have no idea whether the problem is caused
by Thunderbird.

I've just looked in the sub-folders under [profile]\news\ corresponding
to my five news servers, and none of the have "-1.dat" files in them,
several of the news servers have alt.* groups, not that I can see a
reason that should be related.

It sounds credible that dropbox has something to do with the suffixes.

What do the created/modified dates of the file show?

So it may be caused by using the mentioned news server.

They are generated while displaying one of these alt-groups, obviously
only when new posts get downloaded, as I just observed with your post.

*-1, *-2 etc. files are usually only generated when the original file is
either locked (read-only) or corrupted.
I'm not using Dropbox but it looks like Dropbox locks your files while
replicating.

Problem solved.

I only just discovered, that the first dat-file is empty, whereas the
duplicates contain the following, like the dat-files from my other
(de.*) groups:

version="9"
logging="no"

I replaced the empty dat-file with a "filled" one, and the duplication
of files has stopped.

Dropbox was obviously the cause, as mentioned by dillinger.
