#51 — New messages not appearing

Yesterday, something has changed in the behaviour of my Thunderbird
(Windows 78.9.0) which has me bewildered.

A) Newsgroups

I have TB set to download new messages on startup, and yet when I open
the program no new messages are displayed. If I expand the folder which
contains the majority of my newsgroups, I see bold text and an unread
count where appropriate, but no bold text was displayed on the
unexpanded folder name to alert me to the fact that there were new
messages within it.

B) E-mail (POP3)

I have TB set to check for new messages on startup and to automatically
download new messages, and yet when I open the program no new messages
are displayed. Opening folders shows me no new messages; I have to
click on Get Messages before my mail appears, and the appropriate
folders are then emboldened and unread counts appear. After that, new
messages are treated as expected (e.g. writing this draft has caused my
Local Folders to be emboldened because there is a copy in the Drafts
folder inside it).

I cannot imagine that something has changed with both my e-mail host and
my newsgroup provider at the same moment, so the answer to the problem
must lie with TB; but I cannot for the life of me think what it is. I
have made no changes to my settings which should affect this - the only
thing I have done recently is to add a.c.s.thunderbird and a.c.s.firefox
to my subscribed groups and stop checking news.mozilla.org at all.

Any ideas, please?

I should have said "no unread count" rather than "no bold text" - sorry!

You are not alone. I have this problem on my home pc with my home gmail
account on TB. I do not have the problem on my office pc with my
corporate email account (the domain MX record which is hosted on gmail
coincidentally for awesome spam detection).

Whatever was causing it, it is now no longer happening - undoubtedly
because of the update to 78.10.0 the other day.
