I'm trying to filter posts that appear in chi.forsale. This is a local
only for sale group, and this damn jla forums has for years benefited
off the group and posts here from people out of the area. I checked
years ago, and they are no where near the area. They don't appear all
the time, and I don't really know what causes these messages from their
forum to get here. I think there has been three now in the last couple
days. I'm going to post the source to see if anyone can spot anything I
can filter on. I believe I cannot use a custom filter, because that
only allows for header information. If I could filter on "Body" I would
just eliminate anything having "www.jlaforums.com" in it. Anybody got
an idea how to not see this garbage anymore?
TIA

Try filtering on User-Agent: newsSync, All 3 posts have it.
I don't know of any reader that uses it, could be the program they use
to post their adds in news groups.

Yes, I saw that and had looked it up. It is offered on the windows
store. It speaks of being a news reader, and I don't know exactly what
the capabilities of this software is, but I think I'm going to go ahead
and filter like you suggest. I've never heard of anyone else using
this. I don't think many usenetters will be using this, even on a
mobile device. I just hate this jla forum doing this, so they will get
filtered.

Thanks

The NewsSync Beta offered on the Windows Store is an RSS reader.
Searching for generic names like this is always a bit of a PITA.

Since messages are coming from some kind of web forum it's probably
this: <https://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=434&t=682055>

Ha. That forums post are over 13 years old.

NNTP didn't change since then. A lot of Usenet software currently in use
is even older than that.

It would be nice if you could filter on a header which appears in the
overview, but that is typically only:

Subject:
From:
Date:
Message-ID:
References:
Bytes:
Lines:
Xref:full

The situation about the bad actor using giganews, which is a popular
paid provider for reasons principally related to retention and binary
depth, because it isn't 'cheap', might be helpful. Or might not be
satisfactory.

A strategy for testing the filter would be to filter on such as the m-id
and giga (giganews.com) and keep a filter log and see if you are
accidentally filtering on those you don't want to.

Also, if using a 'dicey' filter strategy, it is best to not 'delete' but
to mark as read, so that you can view or not view what is so marked.

I agree. I never even knew you could "delete" a post until a few weeks
ago. I've always marked as read, and then ignored the thread. Now I
have a good reason to keep doing it that way. Thank you.

It would be nice if they figured out a way to filter posts on the
content in the body of the message. Don't know what would be involved,
but surely I can't be the only person ever wanting to do this.

As I said in other reply, I'm gonna filter on the agent. I really don't
want to filter giganews.

Thanks

In its default online mode, Tb doesn't 'see' the msg body until the msg
is accessed into its cache by selecting it.

In order to filter 'effectively' on all of the headers besides those in
the overview as well as the body, you need to put 'something' in between
your Tb and the server, to function as a 'personal' local server for Tb
which local personal news server carries that lifting.

Previously Win users use to use such as Hamster (Playground), but I
don't think that is around anymore. Linux users have used LeafNode.
Some years ago when I wanted more power between Outlook Express and the
news server, I used Nfilter/NewsProxy, also gone now for modern Win.

Ahh, that explains it. I was unaware of the difficulty.

It’s still around.

Website seems to be in German only, but I think the actual program is in
English. I vaguely remember that there used to be English version of the
website, too, but can’t find it anymore. I also think there was English
documentation shipped with the program. However, I remember that it was
really easy to setup, even if help file is missing now.

Yes, it's in English, perhaps written or contributed to by a German.
Last update 2006. It's in Pascal. I took a brief look in the file
cFilterNews.pas and it looks like it might filter on body text, but
I'm not sure.

I also looked at the leafnode docs yesterday. AFAICS it only filters
on the header, though it will optionally load the whole article.

One could build a proxy that runs on the same computer as TB which
- changes every HEAD command to ARTICLE
- scans the body for a filter match
- if not found passes the header unchanged - dropping the body
- if found adds a special 'ignore' header for TB to find

I’m pretty sure it can filter on body text, since Hamster is a local server
and it store both headers and bodies of articles locally.
