Because the Web and the Internet are about transmitting data.

Also, also, also...

I don't write the Firefox delta update program. How does Firefox
GUARANTEE that nobody can intercept an internet connection and send it a
false delta update?

Can you answer this question? Do you work in the Firefox development
team? Do you check and trust Firefox's hashing method?

by inspecting a digital signature that only mozilla can create.

Look at the source code.

Must we trust Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird respectively?

Why can't we use tools like toys? Trust is not always important. :)

This is why we use “https://” in all our URLs nowadays, instead of old
“http://”.

As long as you get the signatures/hashes from the authentic site, you
can get the actual download from wherever you like. So long as the
signature verifies, you know it’s authentic.

That's the point.
It doesn't mean anything when the software creator's computer is
compromised. Or if the creator himself is the problem. Not saying that, one
of Firefox contributors is, but it applies to any software.

Kind of like a double agent where he has an authentic badge and
registration, but has entirely different goal. Authenticate all you want.
You'll always get an authentic agent. But it won't end well.
