That is four day from today, I am just getting through four weeks of
the installation of Windows 11 on three computers, and a hassle with the
software on my TV. (I beat MS security and have three W11 computers
sharing files.) I can not think that far ahead.

Maybe/hopefully this is the functionality that used to be provided by
the "Manually Sort Folders" add-on that became incompatible a few
versions back. The author has claimed that he submitted it to Mozilla
to be incorporated into the main program, but that they seemed to be
stonewalling him. Maybe it finally happened. It's a feature that I
enjoyed but didn't depend on.

Ditto.

I was recently forced to update from 82 to 138 and was appalled at what
was lost. I still am, but I am nothing if not resilient. Heretofore I
had no reason to look at the release notes, but I just looked here and
was shocked by the number of problems that were apparently fixed. I
never saw ANY of those problems in 82, so all must have been generated
by the 'improvements' thereafter.

With any luck, TB may approach the functionality and appearance of 82
within my lifetime -- but I'm not counting on it.

I'm not aware of any version 82. There was 78 and 91.

And has been no programmed forced updates to 138 coming from MZLA. What
is your OS, and from where did you originally get the older version?

Then there have been plenty of issues and enhancement requests that
affected other users and not you - why would that be a surprise?

Not by a long shot. For example, https://mzl.la/44XdzbD are 359 fixes
since version 78 that were created prior to version 78.

Did you perhaps get your version 138 from
https://thunderbird.net/download/ ?

That page has for the last 3 months provided monthly releases (136, 137,
138, ...) by default, as the banner at the top indicates.

Go to thunderbird page. Click DOWNLOAD, presumably the latest release.
Pretty straightforward until I tried to make it actually work...

Mea culpa. It was 68.12. I was running Firefox 82.

Downloaded from mozilla. Slackware. It ran beautifully until
authentication was denied for older versions.

I had no reason to look at info about more recent versions, I had
decided that since I had lost so many extensions and .css entries I'd
stop updating. Ultimately I was forced to, and I'm still not happy.

Both Andy Burns and myself had noted it... though our comments were as
