That's one way to do it, but it's not the easiest way. The easy way is 
to click on the column header you want to sort on. You can also click 
there again to change the sort from ascending to descending, or vice-versa.

By the way, this is not just in Thunderbird. It's a Windows standard and 
works the same way in almost every program that displays a list of files.
