If the shape is so unimportant, why did they spend dev time changing
it? You're trying to eat your cake and have it too.

A good user interface doesn't need to be replaced every year just for
the sake of change.

Not every change is automatically an improvement, and sometimes it seems
that the people responsible for Firefox change the user interface simply
because they can, rather than because it actually makes the interface
better.

Fortunately, Firefox is still customisable enough to fix some of these
"improvements" with userChrome.css.

And yes, tabs below the toolbars. Definitely!

The round/square corners don't bother me, but having just updated to 157
I've found that the active tab colour has disappeared, and is now the
same as the inactive tabs (white). The only difference is that the
active tab is showing a very thin black border round its perimeter.

I've set browser.nova.enabled to false, and the active tab now appears
as it did before in light blue. I don't understand why the active tab
colour was changed in nova, or is it just my Firefox which was affected?

With tabs on the bottom the highlighted tabs makes using tabs more
effective. I like the color border around the active tab.

I am using the "Default" theme ("System theme — auto" in 156).
Active and inactive tabs have different background colours in 157,
as they did in FF 156.
 *  The active tab background is white in 157, as it was in 156.
 *  Inactive tab backgrounds are a pale pastel colour in 157,
and were a pale grey colour in 156.

See screen-shot of 157: <https://imgur.com/a/ptx2x3F>

FWIW it is a coloured border here in 157, varying in colour from
pale indigo at the left to peach at the right.

This may be a problem with the theme which your Firefox is using.

I've been using "Light" theme for ages (Version 1.3.4, last updated 11
March 2024). This is the first time I've seen the active tab change colour.

The "Light" theme in Firefox 157.0 (with nova enabled) applies a
gradient background to the tab bar, which the "Light" theme in
Firefox 156.0.1 (with nova disabled) does not. See screenshots:
    156.0.1     <https://imgur.com/RMBhtna>
    157.0       <https://imgur.com/1F6vsGZ>

When I look in Firefox 157's Browser Toolbox, that gradient background
is composed of
 *  A semitransparent background gradient constructed with two
    semitransparent colours;
 *  Then blended onto a white background (white when the browser is
the active window, light blue-grey when it is not).

I am now guessing that what you saw (with nova enabled) might be a
video driver problem (with that gradient transparency or blending).

When I copy those two links into my Firefox, at first I see what looks
like square corners .... but then, when I click on the images, the
second images do seem to have slightly rounded corners.

Thanks .... But not for me.

Well, that's always possible, but I'd have hoped that any driver issue
would have been picked up in testing.
