I have one, but it hasn't been my primary machine for several years ...

I've got a tower* (or two). The one I'm using now has no CD/DVD (the old
one has) and it's got an NVMe SSD and 2 SATA SDD. I'm using a cordless
keyboard and cordless mouse.

They've given me a laptop to use as a volunteer and another to play with
Linux Mint, but I'll choose my tower over them.

Should have gotten a smaller one and even though I'm savvy enough to
move the CD/DVD from the old tower to his one I can't be bothered. The
power supply of the Corsair is situated at the bottom and the CD/DVD has
to be placed on top. I would need to buy a longer SATA cable and then
hide it behind the motherboard. Too much hassle and I hardly use the
CD/DVD anymore.

I wasn't sure whether Bev distinguished "real" keyboards to be clacky,
and real mice to not be trackpads?

I have several IBM model-M keyboards, but nowadays I like to have a
Windows key available, so use a TKL mechanical keyboard instead, my
rodent has no tail.

Tactile feedback (for a keyboard) is good, but I'd rather not have the
NOISE.

Yes and yes, although keyboard preferences are pretty personal. I tried
every one Micro Center had and didn't like any of them. Clacky with
some sort of light so I can see the number keys in super-dim light would
be nice, but haven't seen anything yet that would make me happy.

Logitech tailless rodents rule, but they eventually die. No idea
how/why, but they do. Takes several years. Tails are good if you are
clumsy and knock the poor baby off the table onto the floor a lot, but
they're otherwise a nuisance. The first time I saw a trackpad (Fry's,
El Segundo) I thought they were a really slick idea. When I actually
had to use one my opinion changed considerably.

I miss Fry's.

My previous Model M was a 1988 model and I still cry when I remember
spilling coffee into it. Current one is 1992 and I'm really careful
about coffee. I have maybe 2 more.

I Currently use a Desktop Computer. My previous one was a HP 6830b Laptop.

At one time, whilst using the HP, I spilt half a glass of Coke-a-Cola on
it. So not Water but (acidic) Coke-a-Cola. It disabled the Keyboard and
Scratch-Pad thingee, but not the actual computer innereds.

An External Keyboard and Mouse and the HP was off and working again.

I have an external (USB) CD/DVD drive for those computers without one.
Also, 3.5-inch floppy.

You never can tell. I still have 4 boxes of 50 virgin 3.5" floppies and
hundreds with data. No drive, but I bet I could find one if I really
wanted one. It was really painful sending off bales of long-obsolete
stuff to the knackers, but we kept some of it...

Like me. I still have old 3.5" disks and an internal drive in my Debian
PC. Even 5.25" disk from Fire Hawk (Thexder 2) game, from Egghead
Software (remember that place, guys?) that my folks kept. Haha. I did
show them off to my young cousin and old friends for kicks.

I do here...
Tower case, 2 Hard drives one of which is partitioned into 2 drives, and a
DVD drive.
Real mouse, real keyboard and a real monitor that in my dotage I can read,
albeit with reading glasses. ;-)

Real software that's easy to navigate because it has proper menus.

As for Tablets and Smart phones... Don't get me started... :-/

One of the bigger problems I notice with those is the lack of hover and
tooltips. The only way to find out what a "button" does is to press it,
then hope there's a way to back out when you discover its the wrong one.

YESSSS to all that. Although I really don't like hierarchical menus for
stuff I don't use regularly -- trying to guess where a stranger wanted
to put a particular item is maddening. GIMP is about the best example
of what I hate.
> As for Tablets and Smart phones... Don't get me started... :-/

Good for travel or emergencies. Last trip (road trip, Utah big circle)
we took I didn't bother with the laptop, the tablet was good enough.
Daughter made the next night's reservation on her phone, though -- I
would definitely have wanted a real computer to do that.

Any chance you're the guy in the chair who had "I ride the big iron" as

Nope. Do you have that signature to show?

Long LONG gone, the oldest message I have is from 2024, and only about a
dozen of them. Steve VanDevender. Google for "usenet sig "I ride the
big iron" which is what I did.

Addendum: Further search revealed <https://www.cluefire.net/> with a
list of really clever comments from the really clever people in a.s.r.
which I read just because there were so many smart posters that it was a
joy to read.

We've lost a lot.

Historical Context

alt.sysadmin.recovery: Formed as a satirical and peer-support haven
for IT professionals dealing with computer and network failures.

alt.sex.reptiles: An eccentric early alt-hierarchy group that
paradoxically overlapped heavily with early internet culture and
literary fan groups.

alt.starfleet.rpg: Widely abbreviated as ASR by its community of
writers engaging in collaborative Star Trek roleplaying.
