In Forté Agent, I can choose to show the e-mailaddress or not. I've
chosen not to, because the Message List Pane becomes cluttered.

I don't remember if there is a separate setting for news and email in
Thunderbird. I have display of email address on in email because it
allows one to find out people that try to fake their identity.

For example:

   Your Bank <banking@promotions.com>

If you hide the email, you only see "Your Bank" and might think it is a
true mail from your bank, whereas displaying the email address you see
that it is not. Or at least that it is suspect.

Windows software likely tend to hid the address, same as it hides the
extension, allowing tricks to be played on users.

That's not such a bad idea. I use TB as a mailclient, but display isn't
showing the e-mailaddress. That hasn't stopped me from recognising every
phishing mail that I have received though. But still, not a bad idea.

I get some very well made mail that claims to be from companies I do
use, they seem genuine, but the mail address shows an advertising
company, the same for all of them. It is possible that the email is
legit, that they hired that company, but I do not know and don't trust
it. So I want to see the email address (yes, obviously I filter them out
easily, once found out).

One company I deal with sends emails where all the links point to some
Adobe click-tracking service. They are basically training their
customers to trust and click on random links.

If you mean name and address in the List Pane, TB (at least 152.0.1
and likely long before) offers three variations: Full name and email
address... Email only... and Name only.

Tools > Settings > General > (scroll w-a-y down) Message List.

Dunno what the default is but I run Name only... individual messages
once opened still display both, be it email or news group.

[As to the example of banks, any I deal with never communicate
directly with a message containing specifics, but simply advise
there's a message waiting which requires login to my account. Canadian
banks are always hammering the message, "We will never contact you and
ask for personal/detailed information."]

There is also the option of displaying the name you have saved in your
contact list instead.

True, but that has to done/undone with each address individually. As
well, it's an edit of how much of a full name a user wishes to see.

I'm not sure if you are meaning this situation with your "each address
individually" but what really bugs me is when you are dealing with a
Corporation/Government Entity and when YOU contact them are a generic
'someone@theorginistaion.com' and you get a response from
'amy@theorginistaion.com' asking you some questions and you respond to
'someone@theorginistaion.com' and you get a reply from
'bert@theorginistaion.com' or 'fred@theorginistaion.com' or whatever.

If they want YOU to send to a particular mailbox, why can't THEY send
FROM a particular mailbox??

How hard would it be??

Er, that's what I described/set out a few posts back up the thread!

No, you did not mention "[ ] Show only display name for people in my
address book"
Which only works when there is indeed a display name set for a contact.
Some address books generate these by default, but not all.

On a side note: do you really add usenet contacts to your address book?

Oops. My bad for the omission of the final point/variation as far as
emails are concerned.

That display name can be doctored by editing the address book entry.

Personally no... in which case, the three radio-buttons are the only
relevant choices.

It could be collected addresses.

I just looked at mine: you are not there, seems to collect only from email.

Tnx. I've set it up to show full name and email address.

I do like to see the funny side of many things in my dotage... :-)
Interesting...

On the particular OS I'm using ATM.
The Mail/News reader app (Pluto 3.20) upfront shows:

Author: R.Wieser <address@is.invalid>
Subject: Filtering Eejits
Source: alt.comp.software.firefox

Even more interesting, now I've moved sideway at my office desk to my
Laptop/notebook, Win10, Thunderbird 140.12.1 upfront I see something
similar displayed.

From: R.Wieser <address@is.invalid>
Newsgroup: alt.comp.software.firefox
Subject: Filtering Eejits

And by looking a bit deeper, behind the scene header data, even you are
not using Thunderbird.

Newsreader: Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2900.5512

So I'm not the only one here, using different News apps, depending upon
what computer I'm using at the time.

What fun... I'm a great believer of the old phrase: "Horses for courses."

D.

Nb: I took great care to be sure I replied with the correct geezer this
time. ;-)

You could teach these people how to quote:
<https://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote2.html#ss2.1>

You could use a newsreader that can create filters based posting's
lines, but I think this will only if you retrieve the full body and not
only headers.

There's newsreaders that can be set up to ignore quotes.

Several newsreaders can use Space to scroll down faster.

Assuming you use Thunderbird (because you mention reading that group)
you can create a filter that marks as read a post that was posted in
another group. Always the same group, mind. Assumes you read the posts
in a certain order.
