#17695 — Filtering Eejits

FromDnews <dnews@triffid.co.uk>
Date2026-07-12 09:25 +0100
SubjectFiltering Eejits
Message-ID<5cf7247a52dnews@triffid.co.uk>
It's happening more and more these days, an Eejit(s) who posts to the
Firefox newsgroup, has a whole list of other Eejit addresses in the header
so that it also posts the same Eejit stuff to the Thunderbird newsgroup
etc, relevant or not.

I don't want to waste what little life I have left after reading something
in Firefox, to find it repeated when I read the Tb newsgroup.

Aside from completely quitting the Tb newsgroup, is there a simple way,
maybe a filter to eliminate these Eejits from my sight?

Thank
D.

Are they duplicate-posting? Or cross-posting?

If they’re duplicate-posting, then you have a legitimate complaint.

That fully depends on the newsreader you're using (which you forgot to
mention).

Though most of the newsreaders offer /at minimum/ a filter referred to as a
"kill file". Put anyones name into it and their messages will be
suppressed. If you're lucky the response tree will be suppressed as well.

From the OP's headers:

User-Agent: Pluto/3.20 (RISC OS/6.20) NewsHound/v1.54

The program used to send the post is Pluto/3.20.

In Usenet and email headers, the User-Agent string lists the software
stack from the front-end application down to the underlying background
transport tools.

Pluto/3.20 is the primary front-end composition program (news client)
where the user physically wrote, formatted, and hit "send" on the post.

RISC OS/6.20 is the operating system environment running the software.

NewsHound/v1.54 is the background transport utility tasked with
connecting to the server and uploading the composed article.

John C. I filter crossposts, various trolls & dizum.com. Doing this
makes this newsgroup easier to read & more on-topic. Take back the tech
companies from India & industry from China.

The OP needs to learn how to ask a question, including as much relevant
information as he has available. My above was a soft nudge towards it

As someone who has been asked for help I should not need to go hunt for
info, hidden in the headers or not.

Thats the first time I've heard about it. It makes me wonder why the OP
posted his question in a Firefox specific newsgroup.

The only relevant info is, I posted to a Firefox NG as I use it.
Firefox is version... 152.0.5
Thunderbird version... 140.12.0

Because the user (Me) happens to be a multi OS user, so he uses both RISC
OS, and MS-Windows on which he uses Firefox and Thunderbird.

Depends which machine and OS he's using at the time...

I can read/write news in either.

Thanks
D.

Dave,

Thread-starter "from:" : Dnews <dnews@triffid.co.uk>

First of, you're a name-shifter. Which is not considered to be anything
good.

> The only relevant info is, I posted to a Firefox NG as I use it.

Second, I'm using batch files, but would not think of posting Firefox
related questions there.

So again, why are you, as a "User-Agent: Pluto/3.20 (RISC OS/6.20)
NewsHound/v1.54" *newsgroup reader* user posting into firefox *web browser*
specific forum ?

IOW, don't try to bullshit me/us.

Third, I already gave you what you could look for - regardless of the
newsgroup-reader you're using. Did you look for it, and if so, what did you
find ?

Fourth, although someone else made a guess what newsgroup reader you're
using, you still have not mentioned/confirmed what exactly you are using.
Why is that ?

Fifth, You have given me/us nothing to go on. What do you expect us to tell
you ?

And do notice that other posters have had to make *assumptions* ("Assuming
you use Thunderbird") about what you're actually using.

Rudy Wieser

One is not violating AUP/TOS at any News site wih reasonable terms of
use. It's a pseudonym, which by definition is a comment on From, nothing
more. Identity is the email address one uses on From, and the News
administrator expects his user to use a consistent email address from
one article to the next. The user reading the article is expected to
kill file based on email address, never pseudonym which again is a
comment and intended to be ignored.

A user repeatedly changing his email address, regardless of consistent
use of prseudonym, is presumed to be avoiding kill files and might be
TOSsed.

Your point here is not well taken.

Qyote editing is low, even for you, Rudy. No one will defend your
hypocrisy nor inability to argue.

You still owe the O.P. an apology for ordering him not to change his
pseudonym. That is not your call, and no one but you considers it bad
behavior given that he wasn't spoofing anyone.

Feel free to prove (quote) where I did so. Otherwise your accusation is
just you
trying to blow smoke into my/our eyes.

Noone will defend your, rather obvious, attempt to ignore and steer away
from demanding I format my messages in a form you like to see them in.

Next to that, your lack of arguing your own above cases, when I pointed out
that you have zero standing toward it, but demanding I do is what makes
*you* the hypocrite.

I *ordered* him ? Feel free to quote/show where I did so. Good luck with
it. :-)

Ah, the famous "everyone is on my side" empty claim. That don't impresses
me much I'm afraid. This is not my first rodeo.

Also, guess again. I recently spoke with people who considered a change of
name and/or email addy - for *whatever* reason - to be nym-shifting. Stupid
ofcourse, but they counter your stance.

Rudy Wieser

Hello!? You don't speak for everyone. You gave me a similar speech when
I told a poster nymshifting is bad form. It appears /only you/ seem to
think that is OK al long as the e-mailaddress stays the same. The least
you can say about it is that it is confusing.

Good grief, what a laugh, what a load of nitpicking testicles, moaning
over the slip of the finger on my part when selecting a reply...

By a slip of the finger I clicked on my "Dave" dnews@ myaddress, instead
of "dnews" dnews@ myaddress when replying.

Now I guess that is a crime when compared to the auto posting of the same
shit to multiple newsgroups... ;-)

Anyway, a couple intelligent folks posted some useful suggestions, thanks
for that anyway... Appreciated.
.
So my participation here is done.

D.

Its not a crime (there is no usenet police force or judge), but posting
under different names (in the same newsgroup) is not considered to be good
either. Too many people abusing it made sure of that.

The last time I thought that I needed to "cloak" myself a bit - long ago,
when I still used a real email address - I made sure that no overlap in
newsgroups existed. It made it much harder to make a mistake like yours.

And to be clear about it, my initial "you're a name-shifter. Which is not
considered to be anything good" was more of an "are you arware of it?"
warning. I had no idea why it happened.

You never get over anything, do you. Damn.

The O.P. used "Dave" after mostly posting as "Dnews". That's actually
friendlier. Rudy was wrong for slamming him for morphing his identity.

One is literally not morphing one's identity when changing the pseudonym
with consistent use of an email address on From, which was the case
here. Confusing? Don't be absurd.

Rudy can be an ol' sourpuss and rather petty.

Adam,

You did not dare to tell me that to my face, now did you ? Coward.

As for me "slamming" Dave ? I think you have a comprehension problem. All
I said that he was nym-shifting, and - implicitily - that it might cause him
problems. It was ment as a warning.

But you thought that your interpretation of what I wrote was slamming the
OP, and as the hypocrite that you are you thought that you should slam me in
retalliation.

Stupid move kid. Real stupid.

Adam,

> Confusing? Don't be absurd.

Yes, its confusing. My newsgroup reader - and I expect quite a number of
others - doesn't show email addresses. The only time I see an email address
is when I reply to a message or inspect its headers.

I think you still live in the last century, when most everyone used a valid
email address. Nowerdays most noone does - for good reasons. My own email
addy, address@is.invalid, might be shared by numerous other people.

> Rudy can be an ol' sourpuss and rather petty.

Ah yes, and you are an upstanding member of the usenet community - with your
unsupported accusations and "you said" claims.
