#18201 — Shopping on eBay.com.au

SubjectShopping on eBay.com.au
Message-ID<118lk9p$22lu9$1@dont-email.me>
I'm trying to do a bit of shopping and need to log on to ebay.com.au
.... but it's been a while, maybe new computer, so eBay wants me to set
up a new account.

No problem, they will give me 'Live Help' to set up a new account .....
when I log into my eBay account which, obviously, I can't do cause eBay
wants me to set up a new eBay account .... so I can set up a new eBay
account when I've set up a new eBay account!!

Or am I missing something??

Anybody here got a eBay account, particularly an ebay.com.au account,
who can offer advice/assistance??

Have you tried to login to existing account by going to
https://accounts.ebay.com.au/acctxs/user ?

Doesn't Ebay have "lost my password" page?

Just for fun I tried it myself, I do have an email address, but no password.
Last time I bought something through eBay was May 2002, last privacy
update mail I got from them was January 2007.
As far as I can remember, I never got an account expiration warning.

Trying to log in gives account unknown.

Apparently unused accounts are expired without warning, or perhaps I
discarded the warning.
It looks like setting up a new account is your only option, I haven't
tried that.

Out of curiosity, I did similar.

But the other aspect is... a buyer doesn't have to have an account:
find the item you'd like to buy... and the prompt has the option to
"Check out as guest" in addition to "Sign in to check out".

Tested that on ebay au/ca/com.

I assume you know your username or the email address associated with
your old account, or that you can retrieve it - for example, from old
notification emails.
You should be then able to regain access to your account through the
page provided above.
The loop may be caused by the fact that the newly created account has
the same information as the old one - it could be the same email
address, phone number, etc.

I have had one other email address so just plugged it in and clicked on
"Lost Password" .... and eBay said they didn't recognise THAT email
address either .... so I guess I'll just have to set up a new account.

Hmm. Just checked if I'd actually been using ebay.com (no .au), but that
didn't log me in either!!

Why would eBay object to setting up a brand-new/fresh account... if
you approach as a New Customer and ignore Live Help?

And why don't you have all data from "that different computer" backed
up independently, i.e. accessible.

Even important financial/personal log-in info can be printed out...
and hidden underneath your Bonds/aussieBum (even Jockeys) in the sock
drawer. Just hold yer nose, mite.

O.K., gave THIS another go (had I actually done it before??) and, after
setting a new Password, I could log into my NEW account ........ as long
as I verified my Identity through Live Help .... which wants me to
"Create an eBay account" rather than returning to my old account!!

Bugger!!

.... which reminds me .... one day I should try setting up the Printer
that I used with the old Desk-top that I used before the old Laptop that
I used before THIS Desktop!! ;-)

There has to be 'something' you're not including in this narrative.
Why would eBay be interested in your supposed olde account in the
first place... while dealing with a new account?

Are you trying to use the same credentials for both accounts (i.e.
user name/password), presuming you have a way of retrieving those from
the other computer?

Do you destroy cookies each time on closing Ffox?

I have no login info/passwords stored for anything financial... and
close Ffox after carrying out just a single institution transaction
before immediately closing.

The obvious question would be: have you tried with another browser
(Chrome, Edge, ...). Or try with a "vanilla" Fx:
<https://portableapps.com/apps/internet/firefox_portable>

Not really relevent for you, but it doesn't matter which eBay site you
sign in to. I can sign into ebay.be, ebay.com, ebay.fr, ... with the
same account.

They’ve sent me a reminder to keep my old account alive. But now, when
I try to login, they want to send a second authentication factor as a
text to the phone number I previously gave them when I set up the
account.

Trouble is, it’s a landline.

I can't remember if Ebay have done it too, but PayPal will call
my landline and have an automated voice read out the authentication
number instead of sending an SMS.

Hmm!! I sometimes get SPAM calls to my landline phone and *they* usually
hang up as soon as my system starts saying "No one is at ho........".

I've sometimes wondered if the distant Server is listing for a
sub-audio/super-audio signal from my phone system which tells the
distant server to disconnect (and ring the next potential sucker instead).
