FYI-I'm running 136.0.1 on 64 bit Windows 10 (not the ESR or other
versions specified in the article Frank linked to) but in my
about:config the preferences xpinstall.signatures.required and
xpinstall.whitelist.required were both present and settable to "false."
Finding out whether this actually works will take someone braver than
yours truly to try adding or using an unsigned add-on after changing them.

I'm often using FF 91.7 and it definitively works.

I had already checked that out. Changing those settings in my 108.0.1
version did not allow for re-enabling of any of my addons. About an
hour after I posted the above about "still working", everything went
to hell in a hand basket!! Tried updating to latest FF but it would
not allow installing of any of addons. Says they are "corrupt". As far
as I'm concerned, Mozilla is what's corrupt!!

The preference to disable the need for signing extensions is
xpinstall.signatures.required which needs to be set to false.

However, the reason that changing that preference did not work for you
is because you are running Firefox 108,0.1. That is a Release version.
Starting with Firefox 48 or 49 (I forget which), that setting no longer
works in Firefox Release versions.

The preference IS still supported in Firefox ESR versions. So if you
were to switch to Firefox 102 ESR or Firefox 115 ESR, you could toggle
this preference to false and your add-ons should work. I just did a test
install of Firefox 91.13.0 ESR for The Real Bev and I was able to
install uBlock Origin, NoScript, and a few other extensions after
setting the above preference to false. They're all working. You just get
a cautionary note in the Add-ons Manager telling you the extension could
not be verified.

BUT, in your case. I would just upgrade to either Firefox 115.21.0 ESR
if you're on Windows 7, or Firefox 136.0.1 if you're on Windows 10+,
because those versions have the new root certificate. No preference
needed! And you don't have to worry about the security issues of running
an older version.

Thanks gym. Would 115.21.0 ESR allow me to use my old profile?

Unless your profile is corrupt, sure. Mozilla automatically moves
Windows 7 users who are on the Release version to the ESR version when
they update.

Firefox 115 is quite mature now, having gone through 22 iterations. But
back up your existing profile BEFORE you update. That way if something
glitches, or if an add-on you can't live without is not yet updated (or
abandoned) for Firefox 115.21.0 ESR, you can reinstall Firefox 108.0.1
and be back where you started.

Thanks for your patience, gym. I'm very spooked about this because the
last time I tried installing 115.0.3 (not ESR) to a different hard
drive, it still wiped out my 108.0.1 profile on my "C" drive. I had to
restore my "C" drive from a backup to recover FF. There was probably
an easier way to do it but that was one way that I knew would work!

So, let me ask you a specific example:

If I install 115.21.0 ESR to my "F" drive, will it have any effect on
my 108.0.1 on my "C" drive?

If not, is it possible to then import my extensions from 108.0.1 on
"C" to 115.21.0 on "F", or would they need to be re-installed?

Is there a way to make 115 look like 108? i.e. Tabs on top, toolbars
the same etc?

Thanks again for you help and patience.

Done. All Mozilla files are copied to another hard drive (not "F").

Here's a run-through of how it should work. Maybe this will drive the
zombies away!

BEFORE YOU UPDATE:
Open Firefox 108.0.1. Go to about:profiles. Look for the profile that
says "This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted." It should
say "yes" after Default Profile. Copy the name of the profile in Root
Directory. Make sure that that is the profile you backed up.

Go to about:preferences and scroll down to Firefox Updates. You should
see an Update to button. Firefox 108.0.1 won't update directly to
115.21.0 ESR in one go. You will need to do several updates.

I just tested this by installing Firefox 108.0.1 and I saw a button that
says Update to 115.0.3. I clicked the Update to 115.0.3 button. Firefox
updated and my previous profile was kept as the default profile.

I went to about:preferences and scrolled down to Firefox Updates again.
Now there was an Update to 115.1esr button. This is where Firefox
switches the channel from Release to ESR. I clicked it. When Firefox
restarted, there was a notice with a Refresh Firefox button. Don't click
it. Click the X at the right to close the notice. I was still on Firefox
115.0.3. Show Update History said Install failed.

But now there was an Update to 115.12.0esr button. I clicked it. Firefox
updated to 115.12.0esr and my previous profile was kept as the default
profile.

I saw a button that said Update to 115.21.0esr. That is the latest ESR
version for Windows 7. I clicked the button. Firefox updated to 115.21.0
ESR and my previous profile was still the default profile. The Update to
button was replaced by a Check for updates button. I clicked it. It says
Firefox is up to date.

Now that I was on Firefox 115.21.0 ESR, I went to the Add-ons Manager
and attempted to install uBlock Origin, NoScript and one other
extension. All extensions were successfully added.

It took several steps, with a glitch along the way, but it worked!

If you don't like this method, you could install Firefox 115.21.0 ESR
directly over the top in one go.

More likely, it just created a new profile. If that was the case, all
you had to do was point Firefox to the previous profile or just copy the
old one over the new one. But what you did works too, just takes longer.

Where is your OS? If it's on drive C, Firefox is going to write to the
registry on drive C. Both Firefox 108.0.1 and Firefox 115.21.0 ESR can
coexist with two separate profiles if that's what you want. I've been
assuming you just want one version of Firefox.

This is a whole 'nother subject! :) Let's get 115 installed first. But,
in short, the answer is yes. But it may take some work to get there.

The drive's not the issue. I have multiple versions of Firefox installed
each with its own profile all installed on drive C. They coexist nicely.
I can even run more than one at the same time.

I'll save some bandwidth and just respond here to all of your great
help posts.

Many, many thanks for taking your valuable time to help me (and anyone
else reading this thread) out! I will certainly save the steps listed
for updating 108 in stages, and use them depending on your answer to
this question about your last statement there:

If I skip the intermediate stages and update directly to 115.21.0
(from ftp archive), does my profile still get saved, or does it create
a new one? Sure would save a lot of steps if it does save the profile!

Anyway, thanks again for all your help!!

Why not just enable Automatic Updates? Never failed for me.

Firefox does not delete the old profile even when it creates a new one.

Here are the over-the-top install steps:

Open Firefox 108.0.1. Go to about:profiles. Look for the profile that
says "This is the profile in use and it cannot be deleted." It should
say "yes" after Default Profile. Copy the name of the profile that
displays for Root Directory. Make sure that that is the profile you
backed up.

With Firefox 108.0.1 still open, click on Help, More Troubleshooting
Information. Copy the name of the folder that displays for Application
Binary. That is where Firefox 108.0.1 is installed.

For example, mine says:

Application Binary C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox108\firefox.exe

So C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox108\ is the folder where Firefox is
installed. (Note: I use version numbers because I have so many versions
of Firefox installed)

Download Firefox 115.21.0 ESR. The US English version is at:
https://archive.mozilla.org/pub/firefox/releases/115.21.0esr/win64/en-US/

Close Firefox.

Run the file you downloaded. The Wizard starts. Click Next to continue.
Under Setup Type choose Custom and click Next. Under Choose Install
Location, Destination Folder, make sure you pick the same folder where
Firefox 108.0.1 is installed (you copied it above) and click Next. Up to
you if you want to install the Maintenance Service. I don't. When it
asks to create icons for Firefox, uncheck all the boxes. It will use
your existing ones.

When you open Firefox, you may get a notice with a Refresh Firefox
button. Don't click this button. Just click the x at the far right to
close the notice.

To verify that you are on the correct version with the same profile,
click Help, More Troubleshooting Information on the Menu Bar. If the
Menu Bar is not displayed, you can press the Alt key to display it
temporarily. Look at the entries for Version and Profile Folder. Version
should be 115.21.0esr. Profile Folder should be the same one you copied
down.

If all is good, try to install some extensions.

This is much faster than the first method. But they both work!

You've come through again,gym. I can't tell you how much I appreciate

reassuring to hear from one who has "been there; done that"! Thanks

Always glad to help when I can, jetjock. I have lots of clients who run
into Firefox upgrade issues, especially the ones who put off upgrading
for awhile or want to transfer a Firefox profile to a new computer.

Can't promise you won't get bit by your Firefox upgrade, but with a
backup of your profile at hand, you're in good shape.

Just want to let you know that I just finished the final touches of my
update to 115.2.1.0 ESR by making the change to my userChrome.css that
put my tabs back on the bottom WHERE THEY BELONG! :-) All my addons
are back and update tells me I have the latest version.

I can't thank you enough for walking me through all the steps (except
the userChrome). All is well in Mozilla land (for me anyway)!

P.S. Two lines have to be changed in the .css file posted on GetHub by
MrOtherGuy for tabs on bottom menubar on top to move the tabs. Will
post lines if anyone wants.

Great news! Thanks for letting me know.

Did you do the incremental updates or install over the top?

Just went straight for the jugular, so to speak. Once you said it
would not destroy my profile I just figured the easy way would be the
best. Only problem encountered was the tabs on top. The .css
workaround didn't work until I found a post about changing two lines
in it which worked great. Here's a link to the post if anyone is
interested.
https://www.reddit.com/r/FirefoxCSS/comments/13ckx1r/firefox_113_tabs_under_address_bar_how_to_do_this/

Scroll down to "The_Wkwied" post for the lines to change. Just replace
the two lines totally with the text shown.

gym, one more question for you please.

I just installed 115.21.0esr on wife's Win 10 machine. Everything went
very smoothly...even smoother than my update. It activated all her
addons, albeit with a warning (not a problem), and even put the tabs
on the bottom using the already installed userChrome.css file.

My question is, when I checked about Firefox in Help it suggested I
update to 128.8.0esr. Is this the last version that works in Win 10
like 115.21.0esr does in Win7? Should I update or leave well enough
alone? Thanks!

Hi!

supported on Windows 10:
Firefox Standard Release * Desktop * 136.0.1

There's no good reason to use ESR versions, except on
old OS versions (Win7). Some (hipster, ultra modern) websites
are broken with ESR versions.

Even for Win7 there's a FF 138 Build, which I use on a machine:
https://github.com/e3kskoy7wqk/Firefox-for-windows-7/releases/tag/138.0-v2

ciao...
