Could be. I don't leave tabs open. However, I also don't leave unused
apps loaded in the background. Firefox for Android (Fenix) has a Quit
option. I configure it to purge all its locally cached data on exit,
but that would only happen if I use Quit; else, Firefox would sit in the
background like all other Android apps until the OS decided it needed
the memory for a newly loaded app (Windows and Linux users are often
caught unaware the apps are still loaded after they thought they exited
them).

I might leave Fenix loaded in the background if clearing all locally
cached data were as convenient as tapping ... (menu) and a Quit option.
Nope, in Fenix, I have to go to ... (menu) -> Settings -> Delete
browsing data -> (everything is already selected since remembered from
before) -> "Delete browsing data" button. Very clumsy, very poor
design, too much trouble versus a simple Quit option (with purge
everything on exit option). Maybe I missed a shortcut to purge
everything without having to exit, or the cumbersome menu drilling.

However, even after opening the first tab, Fenix is still slower than
Chrome to open web sites in subsequent tabs. Subsequent tabs open
faster than the first tab, but still not as fast as Chrome. Even when
Fenix begins to paint (render) a web page, it takes longer to paint to
completion. I keep waiting for elements within the web doc to appear to
finish painting the web doc.

Sometimes it isn't too bad. I click on a hyperlink, and see the page
start showing up. Sometimes I click on a hyperlink, and pickup my
coffee to take a couple of slow slurps before anything changes in Fenix.
And sometimes I check that I still have a data/Internet connection while
waiting for Fenix to start doing /something/.
