ME worked quite well for a long time on a 486, but at some point it 
struggled with some added RAM.  Got tired of the problems and moved to 
Ubuntu.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply.
I think 486 would be quite marginal with ME. I'm running ME here with 1000
MHz AMD Athlon with 128 MB of RAM. I wouldn't be surprised if 1000 MB's or
even 512 MB would be 'too much', but 128 is plenty for software of that
period.

Hi Thom..  The original PC was a smooth operator with WinME.  It worked 
well to the maximum of 1GB ram.  It even served as a shared internet 
connection gateway to a networked dialup modem so that a couple of other 
home pc users could access the internet.

But I guess I was pushing the pc a bit too hard with more processing of 
mp3 files, burning CDs, networking with w-fi, a new "dual" video card, 
dual hdds, more USB support, etc..

It's downfall for me was the poor support for web browsing with the 
available programs at the time.  The required programs that supported 
WinME were simply not keeping up with the newer features of websites.

The system just became increasingly unstable following some of the last 
few updates.

But when I switched that same pc to Ubuntu around 2005, I was totally 
blown away how everything worked "right out of the box" and how much 
more stable everything was.

Good for you to have a stable WinME.  Those were the days, eh?

Hi motzanews58. Seems like you really put your Win ME computer work hard,
wow. And you did get much done with it, and it even worked with 1GB of RAM.
I've used this computer just mostly for basic home computing. Well, I have
used Autocad 2002 on this, and it does work fine with this system. I dont
recall it has ever crashed on this, and I have seen later versions of Acad
on a more modern computer crashing quite often and very annoyingly with some
'fatal error'.

Back in the days, this was my third totally new computer (not upgraded with
new Mobo etc.) after a 286 IBM PS/1 and a 486 (can't remember the
make/model). Was quite expensive, and I was quite impressed by this... yep,
those were the days :)
