Yes, Home has that setting and it's actually the default ('Download
updates over metered connections' is Off by default).
And there are 'Delivery Optimisation' settings for limiting the
bandwidth used for downloading updates.

AFAIK, mostly complete systems, directed at the consumer market, for
example our HP Pavilion laptops. Higher priced HP laptops, especially
the business ones, come with Pro.
FWIW, I've yet to miss any functionality in Home.

But one can quite easily install Home without using/needing a Microsoft account. That's what I did. Yes, the 'holes'/tricks have changed over time, but there still are several. And one can get rid of the Microsoft account after the fact and only use a local account.

It's an old story with Windows. For knowledgable users it's not too bad - they don't make as many mistakes and they have backups if something goes wrong. Once that update screws up the system, you or I would be able to restore it to functionality whether it is with a simple revert to an earlier time, a configuration change or a reinstall. However, most people wouldn't know what to do even if those were the only three options on the screen, they were explained in detail and they had to select one. I don't like to be pessimistic about the intellect of people, but I can't help it. Not only do these people disappoint me regularly with their computer use but I have to participate in teacher meetings where there are obvious solutions to problems staring at the mass of people right in the face and they can't figure out what they might be. -- Andrzej (Andre) Matuch Telegram: @AndrzejMatuch Zephyrus G14 GA401QM on Fedora 41 KDE supporting member

No offense, but this part of the thread is not about "to get things working right again", but about Windows Home versus Pro (started by questions about the 'Pause updates' setting). And, as I mentioned, but Lawrence keeps stripping/ignoring, 'we', the users in the Windows 11 group (and similar groups) have not encountered the 'can no longer update' 'problem' alleged in the OP, so there is no need "to get things working right again". That should put things in perspective, for those who are willing to have an open mind. It gets quite boring, not to mention pathetic, when people who clearly do not use the stuff or/and know little about it, vent about all the terrible things which are allegedly 'wrong' with The Evil OS. As mentioned before, Windows is not a religion. You don't see 'us' coming up with all kinds of diatribes about everything 'wrong' about Linux. Some of us use both Windows and Linux and 'hence' follow crossposted threads like this. I have a (professional) Unix/UNIX background and still use Cygwin's GNU stuff, hence my interest. Bottom line: Advocacy is fine, zealotry not so much.

Red herring. Anyway, the typical simple Windows user is not at all interested in trying to prevent the need for a Microsoft account, so their time is no issue. So, try to keep up and try to read from comprehension. This part of the thread has nothing to do with simple Windows users or their time, but with the differences between Home and Pro.

And how to work around them. Which Dimdows users seem to spend a lot of their time and effort doing -- trying to counter the platform owner’s attempts to direct them along lines counter to their own interests. Which is why they say, Windows is a Great OS -- if your time is worth nothing.

Pathetic, how you appparently feel the need to falsify what your correspondent *actually* said, by continuously lying by ommision. And your continuous childish use of "Dimdows users" says more about you than about them. Trust us, you've shown your true colours enough times. Exactly nobody is impressed. 'Your' OS must *really* suck when your only 'defense' is dishonesty.

I don't have a smartphone, I don't have all the 2FA materials to help tech-support-free companies do their thing. as a consequence, if I were to "lose" a local account on a PC here, the worst case would be I'd fire up Kali and "crack" the password, for fun. Paul already mentioned that you can tell Windows Update to 'Pause updates' for upto 5 weeks. I want to add that, at any time, you can extend that pause for again up to 5 weeks. On our recent trip to/in Australia, I didn't update my laptop for well over 3 months, till we got back home. OTOH, I doubt that Joe Average User will realize/see that this option is there and will realize what effect he can achieve with it. [...]

As I mentioned, the total pause period is not just upto 5 weeks, but any series of periods, each upto 5 weeks. And Windows Update will only interfere with the session if the machine is not powerful enough for the download and partial installation happening in the background. The system will not restart and finish the installation, unless the sales person is so clueless as not to check/set the (non) active hours.

It doesn't confirm that at all, quite the contrary.
