Well, it is a realistic attitude as long as corporations see increased profits regardless of the impact on their 'home' countries, not that multinationals have a home. otoh I don't think a Chinese company that was not benefiting China would last very long.

Not much, but we have gas The problem with gas here is it caused small earthquakes that damaged houses in the area were they were getting the gas out of the ground so that is sort of halted now. A second nuclear power station is planned here, will likely take a while before it is completed. Many windmils on land, and windmil parks in the North sea, those provide about 33 percent of all electricity, and that number is increasing. More and more houses also have solar panels. from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_power_by_country

In the street: left neighbor has big solar panels installed across the road several houses have those. They feed back into the power-net, There is some political turmoil now as normally people with panels would get money back from their electricity bills for the amount they were feeding back, but that feedback money is ever decreasing: https://nltimes.nl/2026/06/30/dutch-solar-owners-told-rethink-energy-use-net-metering-end-nears That is the reason I do not have those on the roof. I do have some flexible solar panels I can lay out in the garden and my own 230V pure sinewavve converter and batteries, so once the (overloaded here) mains goes down, or because of war, I can at least keep the fridge and radio and TV working. Tested that last year.

This is intended to drive away homeowners, from pumping electricity into the grid. For power companies that do pay (positive) FITs, the FIT value does get adjusted for the current situation. For example, my brother-in-law, his FITs dropped when the power company got its own solar field. That's in northern latitudes where the power company is rural and uses diesel generation normally. Fortunately, the panels were mostly paid off, so he now gets to design a new plan for his solar empire. If the generous FIT value offered had lasted for another five years, he might have been able to afford a battery bank of some sort (enough to run the fridge). Paul

I was able to keep a laptop, radio, and a small lamp powered with a small panel. I believe it was 80 W, but I'd bought it used and it was a takeoff and may have degraded. However that was southern Arizona. Even then one rainy winter I had to choose what to power and used a kerosene lamp for lighting. There are some residential solar installations here but I don't know how practical they are overall. It's a narrow valley that often suffers from temperature inversions during the winter, plus the short days.

When my PSA levels started climbing again seven years after my prostatectomy, I spent 33 sessions in a linear accelerator that pumped about a sievert into me (which didn't hurt the cancer cells as much as we had hoped, alas). For a PSMA PET scan I got shot full of a radioisotope (I forget which one but it had a half-life short enough that the cyclotron that made it was next door) before I went through a scanner donut about three times as thick as your typical scanner. (Fortunately I don't get claustrophobia - I think I fell asleep inside the machine.) There was at least one other instance where I got my heart cranked right up on a treadmill while getting shot up with a radioisotope to check my heart function. Throw in various other things like dental X-rays, etc. So I don't worry too much about radiation; I'm doing pretty well - aside from my prostate cancer cells, and they can go to hell for all I care. -- /~\ Charlie Gibbs | In this world there are \ / <cgibbs@kltpzyxm.invalid> | two kinds of people: X I'm really at ac.dekanfrus | 1. Many ways to skin that cat In 1967 I was working as electronic designer for a company that designed among other things for the army and navy and power stations. Working on a Navy ship almost took my life (somebody made some mistake), And it was not really my thing, I liked video and TV. So was open to something more fun, safer, looking for an other job. In 1968 I had designed and build my own Vidicon TV camera, it was portable and battery powered, It landed me a job at the national TV network here. That was nice, the first 6 month of that were a payed training about everything related to video, audio, studio management, video recording... 6 of us were selected, 2 dropped out (you need to love TV and electronics and be able to work with artists and stressed producers, fix things in minutes, keeping artist and musicians waiting for you to fix the recording stuff costs money and causes other problems.. A black screen in all homes is a no-no. And then an exam... Passed. There is more to it, adventure... After many years in broadcasting I started travelling the world one could say. Worked in the US too. Worked for space stuff Medical stuff I am driven by what is best described as 'curiosity'. Will be 80 years in a few month, still coding and designing stuff.
