Three Mile Island was the turning point in the US. There were no deaths directly caused by the incident. Whether there were long term health issues is hotly debated, with a lot of anecdotal 'evidence' but the activists grabbed the bone and ran. Carter, who actually knew something about nuclear plants thought it was a very minor accident but kept silent not wanting to offend the Democratic activists. I was skeptical about Maine Yankee and Seabrook Station but not because of safety. They projected a demand that never materialized. The death blow for Maine Yankee was cheap Quebec hydro. Seabrook continued on a reduced scale after bankrupting Public Service of New Hampshire. Their problem was the courts overturning CRIP, Construction Works in Progress, cost being added to the current rate payers power bill.

In fact it is an exact analogy. Without knowing how long those moments
were, or what it cost in emissions to achieve them its just hand-wavey
nonsense.

Yawn.
More hand-wavey aspirations.
If it were so simple people would already be doing it.
The simple fact of the matter is that when you analyse the cost and
benefits, one thing pops out as the optimal solution and that is nuclear
power, Renewables don't even make it to the finals.
And once you have nuclear, there is no need to have any renewables at
all, nor massive grid extensions. links to other countries massive
battery storage etc etc.
And that's why the renewable industry is telling lie upon lie about
itself and about nuclear power

Never be surprised at people making profit out of government subsidy to
build something expensive and pointless. Look at HS2

Hmmm ... ONLY 'analog' watches ! :-)
DO have a number, actually use the 'watch'
pocket in my jeans for a pocket watch :-)

Always a sane observation.
All we ever have is the "best kludge of the moment".

Nuke power IS very expensive to set up - and
there are lots of nutters who violently oppose
nuke "just because" - think "The China Syndrome"
was Solid Science .... ("Day After Tomorrow" too) ...
Politics has replace science and sense TOO much
these days. Can't get anything useful going.

Not sure that even applies worth a damn.
The best, safest, reactors are "pebble bed".
They finally have the 'pebbles' right. I heard
China is building a bunch. WON'T melt down.

Note that investments in power, indeed most any big,
systems tend to be less "fact based" than "hopeful
speculation" at the best.
Expect 90% of that "AI" investment to come to naught.
That's a HUGE loss, HUGE impact. Yet, people are
investing TRILLIONS with nary a thought. Will make
the old Dot.Com debacle smell like a mouse fart.
But we like to BELIEVE in "super-intelligence" that
can solve all our problems everywhere to the max.
Wonder how much the "AI"s picked up on that during
their training ? Mostly, just think they will be
"Bigger/Faster US" ... not a real "improvement".
Assuming they don't conspire to phase us out
of the equation ...... KINDA think they ARE
at this point ............
More and more and more, the big AIs *do* act
like "beings" - albeit kinda 'alien' beings
Saw a news seg yesterday about theologians
meeting with the big AI people. Conclusion,
pure early medieval shit, was that the things
COULD NOT be "beings", COULD NOT have anything
like "soul". The <fill-in-favorite-god> did
not make/bless them, ergo ......
Now, I don't agree. WE made 'em, BASED all their
training on US, massively - still massively -
added to their capacity and complexity. We HAVE
made "something" - just don't assume much empathy
for us hairless monkey people. If there is ANY
kind of "Off Switch" in OUR hands then we are
a THREAT. The AIs already know that, have shown
that they know.
Dire threat ? NOT easy to say yet. WEIRD SHIT
TO COME - decidedly ! It'll all kick in within
a year or two, no long waits.
DID look into a "CHAT" subscription. Still
pretty cheap. $20 and you get a useful couple
levels up. Don't know what I'd *use* it for
however ...... "art" ? My company days are
done, don't need code or big stats and would
not TRUST it with too much of my personal
or financial shit. NOT gonna 'chat'.
Alas gen-A2, according to more and more news,
sees the AIs as "a real person who understands me"
far more than ACTUAL Real People. Scary on MANY
levels !!!

Nope. We just remember Chernobyl and Fukushima. Can happen again elsewhere.
