Most hifi amplifiers do not use them but connect a true AC waveform with an average value of zero to the loudspeaker. This typically puts around 3mV of DC across the speaker cone. I have one of these on the Test Machine, driving old bookshelf speakers. https://www.circuitbasics.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/TDA2003-Bridged-Amplifier-Schematic.png The single ended version (driving speaker with respect to ground), uses a 1000uF capacitor to block the DC. https://www.circuitbasics.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/TDA2003-Stereo-Amplifier-Schematic.png The voltage you can run that at, is +18V, as it's an automotive amplifier and expects to be run off a car battery. And 18V is about as much as you can expect (exclusive of load-dumps). Paul

Long ago, I designed and installed a little gadget for my R5 to remind
me to switch off the road lights if I stopped the motor. I used a 4000
series chip with perhaps two NAND gates with the particularity that they
could handle some power, that drove a tiny buzzer. Maybe I used
capacitors, but no zenners. I took the power from the same wires used
for reading signals with two diodes. I installed it in the back of the
ash tray, which had a cigarette lighter thing with a light that went
with the parking lights. So I had the two signals ready: lights and motor.
The thing survived working till I sold the car for scrap at the end of
the official life.
On the next car, after the garage did the periodic maintenance, the
battery was too low, so the girl applied the fast charger herself
instead of calling a mechanic.
I learned later that the fast charger applies a high DC voltage. She did
not disconnect the battery. The electronics in the car failed after two
months, I had to replace the instrumentation in the dash board.

For my Mk1 Escort I added a relay to control the lighting circuit energised by the ignition, so all the lights went off when I turned off the ignition. I also added a switch that just turned on the offside side and rear lights for parking, with a warning light under the dashboard. I also added an immobilisation circuit (that shorted the points) that set itself automatically when the ignition was turned off. To disable it, I just had to turn on the ignition and press a button under the dashboard. No electronics, just a two way relay. This foiled several theft attempts. -- Max Demian

They use voltages going to 30 volts to fast charge a battery. I'm not
sure of the exact figures, but I saw them once in the wikipedia.

The battery has an equivalent series resistance, and a "voltage" applied,
causes a current to flow.
ESR Ideal Voltage Source
30V ==> ------/\/\----- (+) VBAT internal (-) ---+
|
-----------------------------------------+
You could consider in a way then, that applying 30V, it's
putting some number of amperes into the battery, when the
Ideal Voltage Source is at 14.4V.
We can estimate the ESR, using peak conditions when the car starts.
I measured this on my second last car (where the starter was
starting to go bad). I measured a peak current of 150 amps
(clamp-on DC ammeter), and a "trough" voltage of 9.6V at the
terminals while doing that. The battery was 12.6-12.8 before
the test started (24 hours since last topped up with shop charger).
3V/150A gives 0.020 ohms.
If we were to put, say, 16V across the ESR, that would be
800 amps. It's possible the 30V number is for a 24 volt battery,
which would be a more "in-bounds" 15V equivalent (for a 12V battery).
When a battery is not healthy, I would expect the ESR to change.
You can then end up applying a higher voltage at the terminals,
to get an "in-range" value of current to flow. That's how
my Sears dumb charger was attaining high terminal voltages,
it's pushing less than 6 amps and has "soft rectifiers" to do
that. It didn't use silicon diodes, it used selenium rectifiers.
Under the right conditions, the rectifiers would start to smell
(warm).
Such old chargers are not "ideal voltage sources" with zero
output impedance, the characteristic is soft on purpose, similar
to an impedance-protected electric motor. If the battery is
completely flat, there would be a short interval where the
battery rises to the knee, where the current flow could be large,
and the supply tends to current limit by design. Maybe the
transformer buzzes a bit when that is happening (a sign it
might be an impedance-protected transformer). The open circuit
voltage on the Sears charger, might be able to make 16-18V, I haven't
checked that to see. If the ESR is high enough, little current
is flowing at the 16V level.
The design objective of the old chargers, was to use "as few
electronic components as possible", the copper wire being the
most expensive part (today at least). It's because of the price
of copper, we have innovation in devices to reduce the amount of
copper needed. That's part of the justification for smart
chargers -- we didn't give a rats ass about "charging
a battery properly", instead we cared about the BOM cost of
the device and reducing the copper component. That's also
why we have "inverter-based" microwave ovens. It gives
a different cooking characteristic, but the exercise may have
started as a way to save on copper usage.
Paul
