Apparently, the Google Fiber has an ONT, and the router
comes after that part.

The experimental ONT, the ElectroOptics run at 20Gbit/sec,
and sub-rates of that are possible. Normally optics that
fast would be too expensive for consumer service, but the
20Gbit/sec optics cover off a lot of potential solutions.
We used to joke with our optics guys about "when will
optics be cheap enough", and they would counter with their
"you should check out our $100 module". and of course the
$100 one was always a let-down. This optics-teasing has
been going on for a long time, the "when will it be cheap
enough". well, Google found one.

The router can be provided by the user, or the router
could be some sort of rental provided by Google. The
Google router is preferred, if the rate being rented
is extremely high, and the Google router is selected
specifically to make the best of the service. Having
a 10GbE ONT and service, and connecting a crappy 1GbE router
to it, would be silly. The Google-provided router option
then, is just to save the customer from doing a lot
of shopping to find just the right high-speed router.

"Learn about your Multi-Gig Router GFRG300 for 2 Gig, 5 Gig, or 8 Gig service "

https://support.google.com/fiber/answer/11277663?hl=en

The GFRG300 does have a USB connector, it may originally
have been designed for NAS purposes (as it has a blue tang),
but the firmware apparently restricts it to "tech support",
which would be things like firmware flashing or something.
You can't hang an ASIX off it and use it as an additional
1 GbE port.

https://shane.kinsch.com/multi-gig-google-fiber-router-wifi-mesh-tri-band-ports/

Otherwise, you'll have to consult the manual, because the
available pictures of the Googly Device, nobody ever takes
pictures with stuff plugged into it. I cannot detect
"storage usage", unless I catch somebody with a USB stick
poking out the back of the unit.

As it is, some of the mounting options for the
device, make access to the ports inconvenient.

I would conclude from this, from a home network arch point
of view, you should do your storage off some
subtending equipment, not off the GoogleTron.
Maybe that would be a NAS, off an RPi, or something
similarly imaginative. There are various projects
like say "FreeNAS", for using some item as a NAS
when it wasn't intended for that.

While the Google box has a couple 1GbE and the
real output is a 10GbE for a downstream device,
the Google box does not leave the impression of
being the "master router". It's still more tightly
associated with the ONT rate. And you still need
a damn good router as the next box in line. The Google
box does have a VOIP ATA RJ11 connector. Putting it on the
high speed side, is an attempt to prevent starvation
if run downstream in a bad spot.
