I think we discussed this one already.
That's *not* how you transfer sixty million files.
You image the partition with a cluster level tool,
and by comparison to file level, it screams. It
runs at disk speed.
Then at the other machine, you restore at the cluster
level. Now, all sixty million files are there, and you've
saved enough time to take a vacation.
I have samples of fragmented volumes here, stored as .mrimg .
If I want to show an example of a fragmented volume, I can load
one of those up in about ten minutes or so. The top one, is
64 million files stored in a single directory. The second one
is 64 million files in a tree.

It's the same with using 7ZIP for archiving. 7ZIP can run pretty
fast, on solid block files of a good size. However, if you feed it
a tree structure full of small files, it doesn't matter how fast your
CPU is, the program "starves" for want of responses from the file system.
You might get 10MB/sec from it. That's because the disk heads are
flying around. Even if you use my RAMDrive for this, it's *still*
slow. That doesn't help either, as just the file system stack takes
too long per file handled.
But working at the cluster level works a treat, a backup and restore
and you're done. And it isn't even lunch hour yet. It does take
time, for the backup tool to "crawl" the tree and make the
index they like to use. That's still an expensive part of it.
If you attack that problem file-by-file, it's the heat death of the
universe bad.

Windows has a copy of tar.exe in System32 now, and I
can try that, but it processes about 10MB/sec. A wild guess
is that this might take two hours, but I can't really be sure.
(You can't afford to turn on Verbose, or the terminal
might become the limiting factor.)
I'm trying to avoid explorer.exe getting a "whiff" of
the folder, because once that happens, explorer rails
on one core as it counts files and so on. The way to stop
explorer.exe from working on that, is to rip the file system
away, and once the "pointer" to the file system is not
available any more, it stops. You would not want explorer.exe
doing the copy. tar.exe is looking less efficient than
a backup and restore (the restore of 64 million files took
about 3 minutes 40 seconds). You can also kill explorer.exe in
Task Manager and start another one, if you like.
Robocopy should not be counting files like explorer.exe does
when it prepares to do a copy, but I would expect it's going
to be one of those two hour things. It's going to be in a
different ballpark.

Windows seems to force you into thinking in terms of sector-level copies and low-level “imaging” and like that. Filesystems are supposed to abstract away from all that. They do on Linux, but it seems Windows hasn’t quite caught up to that idea yet.

No, you just gotta use your brain. That is all.
Who in their right mind, picks the least efficient
way to do something ? The slowness of large hard drives,
demands discipline on the part of the operator, no
matter what OS they're on. Always find and execute
the efficient way.
Why do yo think I do these experiments ? I want
some measure of how bad these things are.
at some point, the effects of file system slowness,
are swamped out by the size of the files. If you
have 64 million files each 1GB in size, then
it hardly matters if an additional seek is required
to stat() the file.

I haven't finished testing, but while testing Macrium again,
I noticed a new issue. These are the breadcrumbs.
Feature_C12
tune2fs -O ^orphan_file /dev/mydevice # I presume this downgrades 6.x kernel EXT4 with this being enabled.
e2fsck -f /dev/mydevice # By doing that, Macrium Reflect should be able to back them up again.
I got the warning about Feature_C12 and I also was not
able to burrow into the EXT4_Feature_C12 partition with
7ZIP switch army knife. So that feature is a general
problem for me, and my small set of cross-platform tools.
That is why I will need to finish testing it. Because the
Feature_C12 is going to slowly leak into my disk collection.

I don't and so I solved the dilemma by moving to Windows. Have a nice day or evening where ever you are.

The Windows defragmenter is a pretty clever design now. The one in WinXP era was written by a third party company, and it was of the "solid green bar" kind, with all the files pushed shoulder to shoulder. The one written in-house by Microsoft staff, doesn't do that. Space is left between files. I haven't seen a description of how that helps, but normally fragmentation is not an issue. And I haven't seen reports of fragmentation-related issues. The defragmenter does "consolidate", there is *some* pushing together, but it's not the solid green line kind of effort. This is why the defrag takes ten minutes instead of eight hours. Defragmentation of hard drives in Windows is still a thing, and the Optimizer has this scheduled for once a week or so. At which time, the fragmentation might be 2%-3% or so. Unless you have used pathological tools to fragment the file systems on purpose, they're not usually chopped all that much in a time frame like that. You could, for example, use the Passmark Fragmenter, to implement a pathological case. The way Windows buffers data on writes has changed. And this could be seen in the Passmark Fragmenter. In an OS like windows 7, you could see fragments 4096 bytes in size (one cluster). While the OS writes in cluster quanta, the write buffer was changed to 64KB, and it won't write one cluster when one cluster is ready. It waits until there is a larger amount. This caused the writer on the Fragmenter to make no fragment smaller than 64KB. And you could no longer achieve the same level of "Swiss Cheese" in the file system, as before. This could partially be due to the prevalence of SSDs and the need to write in block-sized chunks, or it could be related to the COW problem. But quietly, a change was made to writing, and I haven't seen a popular article with the details. I don't use CCleaner here. What was the problem again ? There are people who use Registry Cleaners. Is that clever ? Not really. The registry files stay relatively small. They're journaled for integrity, the file system has a journal as well, making the Registry files quite good at avoiding trouble. Corruption of the Registry might be more common in the Win98 era when the power goes off. Paul
