they have been trying for years,
But not succeeding

Ukraine is also hitting the factories that make the missiles, the
factories that make the explosives and the railways used to bring them
together, As well as blitzing everything that is capable of carrying men
and munitions to the front. 260 Russian troops surrendered a day or two
ago and Ukraine took back another 200sq km.

Russia is targeting hospitals, schools and apartment blocks, because
they cant get strategic targets. They have been very successful at
railway locos though

However Russian generals keep meeting with fatal accidents Overall I
think Europe is slowply winning agaoints but its still a hard grind

Of course all this has nothing to do with high diesel prices, They only
happened after Trumps failed little '3 day military operation' against
Iran..
What a maroon

  Year MWh MW Hours Country

  2027 19000 1000 19 UAE

Now, that's a battery :-)

It has 5200 MWp of solar panels, 19000MWh battery, at
a cost of around 6.1 billion USD. 90 sqkm land required.

I've tried to find a breakdown, of how much the panels
cost of that total, to use as a scale factor for other
solar projects, but the info doesn't seem to be available.

The batteries are getting bigger.

*******

Not everyone is ready for them. For some reason, PEI in Canada
(an island on the East coast) installed a battery maybe a year
ago, and it recently had a fire. The batteries were modular,
so there was space around the module involved. But the only response
the fire department there had, was to keep dumping water on it
and adjacent modules, to cool it off. And when the smoke would
die down (and the citizens would assume it was out), the fire
would flare up again. It doesn't appear that firefighting has
advanced at all with this stuff. There was one proposal, to put out
the fires by adding liquid nitrogen to the box, but I haven't
heard of anyone actually deploying such a scheme.

And looking at pictures of these projects, they still look like
Lithium storage, rather than Vanadium flow batteries. Maybe Lithium
is cheap enough now, to make it the attractive option.

For the same price you could get an infinite hour nuclear reactor of the
same power

That would last 60 years
Data centres have done their sums, too.

Not exactly related, but I saw in the media the other day a design for
electric cars, that would eject (with rockets or explosives) the battery
pack in case of fire :-)

Certainly coal-free, given that the last UK coal-powered generator
closed over two years ago (even though having flue gas de-sulphurisation
fitted it was allowed to continue, like coal-fired plants in Germany,
Poland and Turkey).

But I don't see *any* day in the past year where less than 12% of UK
electricity supply was fossil sourced, the maximum was 55%, would the
lights have stayed on without it?

Ah, I yield; maybe it was coal-free, not fossil-free, or maybe - as I
think it the case - there have been _moments_ when it was the latter.

I'm not one of those "renewable" nuts who wants all fossil stations
turned off, at least not until we have sufficient storage capacity and
nuclear stations, which isn't going to be any time soon - we don't have
enough suitable mountains (only Dinorwig in Wales and, I think, one in
Scotland), and batteries are expensive (and nuclear stations take a Long
Time).

Personally, I don't like the Senate idea, I don't like the idea of
having to elect another bunch of overpaid incompetents. I don't like
the idea of having wholesale appointments by the PM of the day for

The rampant panic of the renewable industry is that they know that once

That's your opinion. And may well be correct for some locations
(possibly even large parts of the USA). I can see it happening for UK,
though possibly not in my lifetime (I'm 66). Certainly applies
generation-capacity-wise in some parts, especially of Scotland, already,
though they still have some way to go with the storage capacity aspect
(though it's less of a concern there as the wind rarely stops - to the
extent that even Diesel backup probably suffices).

Chernobyl, unfortunately, frightened a lot of people (arguably
justifiably). But I'm on the whole very much in favour of nuclear.

I think both Rolls-Royce and Hitachi already have such units ready to be
built and deployed once anyone orders them. Oh, hang on, you said
_mobile_ - I don't think they have that quite yet, but certainly small
modular designs to suit small communities.

Again, your opinion. Things look different from the UK perspective -
wind especially, though I am surprised how much solar is also going in,
given our climate.

Three Mile Island was the turning point in the US. There were no deaths
directly caused by the incident. Whether there were long term health
issues is hotly debated, with a lot of anecdotal 'evidence' but the
activists grabbed the bone and ran.

Carter, who actually knew something about nuclear plants thought it was a
very minor accident but kept silent not wanting to offend the Democratic
activists.

I was skeptical about Maine Yankee and Seabrook Station but not because of
safety. They projected a demand that never materialized. The death blow
for Maine Yankee was cheap Quebec hydro. Seabrook continued on a reduced
scale after bankrupting Public Service of New Hampshire. Their problem was
the courts overturning CRIP, Construction Works in Progress, cost being
added to the current rate payers power bill.

In fact it is an exact analogy. Without knowing how long those moments
were, or what it cost in emissions to achieve them its just hand-wavey
nonsense.

Yawn.
More hand-wavey aspirations.

If it were so simple people would already be doing it.

The simple fact of the matter is that when you analyse the cost and
benefits, one thing pops out as the optimal solution and that is nuclear
power, Renewables don't even make it to the finals.

And once you have nuclear, there is no need to have any renewables at
all, nor massive grid extensions. links to other countries massive
battery storage etc etc.

And that's why the renewable industry is telling lie upon lie about
itself and about nuclear power

   Always a sane observation.

All we ever have is the "best kludge of the moment".

Nuke power IS very expensive to set up - and
there are lots of nutters who violently oppose
nuke "just because" - think "The China Syndrome"

Politics has replace science and sense TOO much

Not sure that even applies worth a damn.

The best, safest, reactors are "pebble bed".
They finally have the 'pebbles' right. I heard

Note that investments in power, indeed most any big,
systems tend to be less "fact based" than "hopeful
   speculation" at the best.

Expect 90% of that "AI" investment to come to naught.
That's a HUGE loss, HUGE impact. Yet, people are
investing TRILLIONS with nary a thought. Will make
the old Dot.Com debacle smell like a mouse fart.

But we like to BELIEVE in "super-intelligence" that
can solve all our problems everywhere to the max.

Wonder how much the "AI"s picked up on that during
their training ? Mostly, just think they will be
   "Bigger/Faster US" ... not a real "improvement".

Assuming they don't conspire to phase us out
of the equation ...... KINDA think they ARE
   at this point ............

More and more and more, the big AIs *do* act
like "beings" - albeit kinda 'alien' beings

Saw a news seg yesterday about theologians
meeting with the big AI people. Conclusion,
pure early medieval shit, was that the things
COULD NOT be "beings", COULD NOT have anything
   like "soul". The <fill-in-favorite-god> did
   not make/bless them, ergo ......

Now, I don't agree. WE made 'em, BASED all their
training on US, massively - still massively -
added to their capacity and complexity. We HAVE
made "something" - just don't assume much empathy
for us hairless monkey people. If there is ANY
kind of "Off Switch" in OUR hands then we are
a THREAT. The AIs already know that, have shown
   that they know.

Dire threat ? NOT easy to say yet. WEIRD SHIT
TO COME - decidedly ! It'll all kick in within
a year or two, no long waits.

DID look into a "CHAT" subscription. Still
pretty cheap. $20 and you get a useful couple
levels up. Don't know what I'd *use* it for
however ...... "art" ? My company days are
done, don't need code or big stats and would
not TRUST it with too much of my personal
or financial shit. NOT gonna 'chat'.

Alas gen-A2, according to more and more news,
sees the AIs as "a real person who understands me"
far more than ACTUAL Real People. Scary on MANY
   levels !!!

Which had almost no effect on anything.

Especially Fukushima. The non event of the tsunami.

Tsunami kills 20,000 people and destroys several towns.

40 year old reactor loses emergency cooling and melts its core, which
ends up precisely where molten cores are supposed to end up. At the
bottom of a radiation containment vessel, No one is even hurt.

But the only 'disaster' Carlos remembers is a damaged nuclear plant.

The most amazing thing about Chernobyl was, that given the fact that a
crazy bad Russian designed reactor was sitting there on fire for a long
time with *no containment in sight*, how *little* damage it actually
did. 75 firefighters died I think. 3000 people in Prypyat were not given
iodine pills and got (treatable) thyroid cancer.

And that was it. Wildlife stayed, some people stayed. No upticks in
other cancers at all, even from people inside the exclusions zone

Dire predictions made by left wing scientists based on the wrong data
never materialised
No two headed dogs, No twisted trees. Some frogs turned black. Melanin
is a useful radiation shield and they were essentially inside the
reactor site suffering very high radiation.

All checkable facts. All forgotten or ignored by world press. Because
invisible scary demons that [don't] kill you are better news that boring
floods that kill thousands.

And its far easier to make money in an EU that enforces a 'renewable
obligation; by selling windmills and solar panels to gullible lefties
than it is to explain to them that actually they have been lied to, and
nuclear power is in fact what they actually need.

Ah. There speaks the True Left wing mind.

Facts are irrelevant, what counts is what people can be made to *think*,
Transgender people, like Tinkerbelle, exist because people *believe in

It's all very touching, but hardly the way to run a National Electricity
