Imagine 100,000 of those running across a plain towards
you, armed with broadswords. But not yelling anything,
because the developer didn't pay for the voice option.
All you'd hear is a 100,000 tin-can noises before you're
chopped to bits.

And if they can do that, why not make one that looks
like Robbie the Robot and says things like "Danger,
Will Robinson". Think how many lithium batteries you
could fit in a tub like this. And the range you'd get.

given that it was choreographed, they clearly had to have programmed in
the steps, either precisely timed, or it listened to the audio to match
the music. my guess is the latter.

It'll be programmed. Dancing in time to music is an extremely complex
process. The motor planning and reactions will be too slow if purely
algorithmic. 

Far easier to fix timing issues in video post processing ;)

analysis of audio were used. If the B/D people play some 
randomly-selected song, will the robo-dog dance to that, too? That would 
IMO suggest that his speculations are correct.

that's not quite what i said, and a different song would require
different steps. it might move in rhythm, but it won't look that good.

what i said was they likely programmed in various dance steps and then
choreographed a dance for that particular song using those steps, with
the timing based on the actual audio.

determining bpm of the music is very easy (not what i would call
'algorithmic analysis') and the motor ballistics are known.

the hard part is the choreography :)

Choreography takes as much creativity as writing music.

You'd want to see, if for the music they selected for
that video, there was a music-video available. And if the
human dancer in the video did similar moves. That would
tell you where the inspiration came from.
