I think there was a post on Hackernews about USENET a while back that
caused a surge of new users.

Here is a list of active groups that someone posted on
alt.usenet.newbies:

rec.food.cooking (Busy!)
rec.arts.sf.written
comp.lang.python
comp.lang.perl.misc
comp.lang.c (mind the spam, but there are definitely real posters too)
sci.electronics.design
sci.electronics.basics (quiet, but there are people there)
sci.electronics.repair
alt.fan.usenet

Are there groups that you would recommend?

Safe travels!
