"Media Player Classic - Home Cinema (MPC-HC) is a lightweight player with broad format support.
It includes keyboard shortcuts, audio/video controls, a web interface for remote control and more.
The program is derived from Media Player Classic (MPC), a media player that mimics the interface of Windows Media Player 6.4, and adds support for EVR rendering, H.264 and VC-1 video hardware acceleration, bugfixes, additional languages, decoders and more."

John, I know that you're the resident retro guy, but what's wrong with VLC?

Not answering the question for another:

The only reason to use VLC is Linux? :)

I've posted before that I still use VLC, mainly for downloading subtitles from opensubtitles.org using the VLSub extension.
It does that very well.

Cross platform softwares are made to be usable on any OS.
But that also restrict them for using OS specific features.
IOTW, they're not well made for specific OS.

Exactly.

When I was younger and doing the P90 fitness program (not the P90X, just
the P90), I played the workouts in VLC.

VLC works, but it locked up on me a few times. MPC-HC has never done that.

Other than that, I just don't like VLC's UI as much as I do MPC-HC's.
This is probably because VLC is designed for several OSes.

However, since my plan is to dual-boot Linux Mint on my W10 Pro system
so that I can phase myself into escaping Windows, I'll probably have to
go with VLC in the long run.

Same here, but UniGetUI already warned me about the update and installed
it.

Maybe we all should go back to the good,
old MPC, unless you need special codecs.
