CIA grades anti-virus programmes; some don’t come out well

Full story:
http://www.scmp.com/tech/enterprises/article/2077242/cia-grades-anti-virus-programmes-some-dont-come-out-well?cx_tag=recommend_desktop#cxrecs_s

Peppering the 8,000 pages of purported Central Intelligence Agency
hacking data released Tuesday by WikiLeaks are reviews of some of the
world’s most popular anti-virus products.

The hackers are quoted taking potshots at anti-virus firms, suggesting
the American intelligence agencies are keenly aware of flaws in the
products meant to be keeping us all safe online.

The data published by WikiLeaks isn’t systematic enough to draw firm
conclusions about the reliability of one product or another and the
uncertain dating means the CIA’s critiques provide more of a snapshot
than an overview.

Still, the posts show America’s top cyberspies aren’t always flattering
about commonly used security software.

People like to feel safe and secure. That's it. From what is, at
times, a questionable subject. Hence advertising campaigns. Creative
marketing. Drugs and healthcare. Who but a dirty communist doesn't
love a wonderful story of rags to riches -- when an AV type rises into
the ranks of discretionary incomes -- then gets caught in a passionate
Latin American scandal replete with sex, murder and mayhem.

I wonder why M$ Security Essential, Window$ Defender and Norton
Anti-virus was not graded... :)

It didn't start until passwords, which were introduced to a greater
public reception of possession and personal rights by W95 or possible
Windows 3.11 for Networks. Which, by Windows Millennium, Microsoft
accorded recognition for the greatest concerns, regarding security,
given them by its public user base. Computer sciences, programming
skills and operational competency shifted wholesale, déclassé, to the
allure of whizkids nipping at the heels of ignominious hacking.

So, of course, the writing is on the wall. It's what people want, ie-
people who can't otherwise afford to engage in a perceived, and
active, hostility towards a complexity and tangible difficulty of
mastering computer sciences. Much less a modicum of preventative
measures, such as backups or a binary OS restoration. To the fanfare
of...Let the games commence, ladies and gentlemen. . . .

Now, it's up to big business to sell that and fulfill the perceived
need for The Peoples' safety.

Wikipedia, to the contrary, rates John McAfee quite well. Sired as an
Army brat from an English woman, on British soil, he rose to the
challenges of capitalism, in the anti-virus field, subsequently to
squander $100M, venture capital assessed from the McAfee Associates
empire, on lucrative ventures John provided by mansions built for the
rich and famous. Which the Wall Street whizkids consequently shorted
for him on derivate investment instruments during the United States
Housing Bubble debacle, presently responsible for just under
one-percentile interest rates in the Money Market.

John then took his $3M, remaining from the $100M McAfee AV empire, and
ran for President of the United States. Last year. Related political
assays in Belize, Latin America, hadn't turned out well. Belizean
police had investigated him in connection for unlicensed drug
manufacturing and the murder of a neighboring American expatriate,
Gregory Viant Faull. The investigation was then summed up: "McAfee
extremely paranoid, even bonkers," by Belize's prime minister;- his
assets were seized, and his home was burned down under suspicious
circumstances.

Obviously, as you can see, I'm not one to grade an anti-virus program.
I've never, actually, used one, all but for the rare, very, exception
of parsing a stray bit through CLAMWIN, distributed by Sourceforge. I
walked away from Symantec, a great respect once for a Peter's leaner
namesake, in entirety (although they did do rather a smashingly
bang-up job with advancements from sector imaging in later Symantec
treatment of Norton Ghost Enterprise Edition).

I think Mr. Norton lost control of his company after Symantec bought it.

I'm still running, looking at this moment, Peter Norton's Norton
Commander. So to date it from 1986 and a positive reception, to say
the least, given Peter in computer communities, clubs and
organizations. It's parsed through Windows' CMD for a Child Process
of 4NT -- which does interact, further limiting some of 4NT's
functionality, which as well can be incompatible with a proper Windows
CMD interface -- sic, most directly through an immediacy of the Norton
Commander [always active and present at a default state] Command Line.
Something a later Windows' evolvement and multitude of Norton versions
since, to this day, have deviated [all apart from any lack thereof for
Explorer to abnegate], in that a keyboard-addressable computer
interface, naturally, has been supplemented with a XWindows iconic
motif Microsoft Windows modeled itself. Assuredly, so to speak, to
prevent further cryptic and obfuscatory inferences to an high-level
language of logic and premises whereby best we, clearly and concisely,
may contain the computer.

-
Peter, after entering a Buddhist monastery for a period of five years,
married a Black woman from Watts, Los Angeles, and decided to build
the Norton Empire. Which he then sold to Symantec for three times its
assessed value -- exclusive of further rights, stipulations,
legalities and products conducive to a direction Symantec should
further assume.

He then befriended famous musican, Brian Peter George St John le
Baptiste de la Salle Eno, instrumental to social influences played by
David Bowie, The Talking Heads, and DEVO, et alii. . .

That's not their job. Why don't you tell Microsoft to do it? Or do it
yourself?

Aren't Americans supposed to believe in and trust CIA more than

They could confiscate others' properties including source codes from
Micro$oft, I supposed.... :)

Anyway, Window$ 10 had too many new features that many don't care about
nor need.

I want them removable and erasable, not even a scratch is left!

Then make your own operating system with only the features you
want. If you use an OS made by someone else, you're stuck with what
they give you.
And, of course, you're not obligated to use anything from
Microsoft. I like Ubuntu and make use of it frequently, though not for
Usenet.

I agree. Let's cut the wires? And the funding as well? :)
