Hi Jolly Roger,

Thank you for proving my point.

Amazingly, you _never_ get even the _simplest_ facts correct. Never.

We know each other well, very well, mostly from the iOS newsgroups.
o Yet again, Jolly Roger, you prove to _belong_ in that "elite" list.

This fact is _completely_ lost on you - and yet - it's obvious to adults!
o Every single one of you are _well known_ to me - and to all.

*You're so stupid Jolly Roger ... basic facts like that ... elude you.*

The fact you can't comprehend facts is evidence, in that you missed the
facts that I've repeatedly stated when I added folks (most recently, Nil),
that you're _all_ well known to me as being immune to reason.

Yet ... you ... Jolly Roger ... I added without even needed to remember.

The point is that _all_ of you (about a score) are in the _same_ category.

*The score of you constantly prove three things:*
1. You are not just plain stupid... you're incredibly stupid, Jolly Roger.
2. You revel as that of a child... you're incredibly childish, Jolly Roger.
3. You don't comprehend fact... your entire belief system is imaginary.

It's not random, it's a site run by a security researcher. presumably
its nature makes it a target for other less-ethical "security
researchers".

You know it is a site run by a security researcher how? Because the site
says so? And noone every lies on the internet? All sites tell the truth?
I have no idea whether or not this site is legitimate or not, nor
whether it has sufficient security walls around it to prevent either him
or a hacker from using it to obtain probable passwords. But I strongly
suspect you do not know either, that you are simply using the claims on
the site itself to evaluate the the site.
(And I would hardly call Consumer Reports a good source for examining
and verifying security claims.)

Give it a rest, will you!? Just because *you* - apparently - have
never heard of the site or/and the man, doesn't mean they are dodgy/
not_trustworthy.

That you have no idea is blatantly clear. Yet you spread FUD and -
after being called on that - *continue* to spread FUD.

The site and the man have been all over the media (at the time and
afterwards). Sorry to hear that you didn't get the memo/message.

The author’s identity doesn’t make the site safe, the way they’ve
implemented it does (see my other posting). You should be verifying that
before typing secrets into it.

Why would anyone base their argument on the identity of the author if
they’d looked into the real confidentiality characteristics of the site?

It doesn’t transmit the candidate password to the server, it transmits a
truncated hash of it. See the privacy link[1] from the same site, and
use your browser’s debugging tools to verify what is in request it
actually sends.

I believe he's making the argument that if he finds
"nospam@example.invalid" has been compromised, he has no way of knowing
whether it's

  * the email address at "example.invalid"
  * the userID (when User=emailAddress) at some website somewhere.

I agree entirely on this point. The trouble becomes when you've
forgotten that you were a member of $webForums and now seeing that your
email address got compromised, but not knowing it was on _that_ site; so
your compromised account continues to be, well, compromised there.

Usually that's true. However, haveibeenpwned does give list of the
sources of where the email had been seen (e.g. linkedin) if it's seen a
specific site's breach. So, if you see that linkedin, myspace, etc have
been implicated then they'd be a good start to change.

That is true. However, if you change the password for all those that you
*do* remember then you can guarantee that the unknown compromised site
won't be a vector to your other sites.

This is why I have an email address that I only use for sites that I
don't trust and it's never used for anything remotely important. If I
forget what sites I've used it for, it doesn't matter. Nowadays that's
unlikely as I use a password manager and I know exactly how many that is.
