"Security company AVG, well known for its free and commercial security
products that offer a wide range of security related safeguards and
services, has put millions of Chrome users at risk recently by
breaking Chrome security in a fundamental way in one of its extensions
for the web browser.(...)
AVG put millions of Chrome users at risk, and failed to deliver a
proper patch the first time which did not resolve the issue. That's
quite problematic for a company that is trying to protect users from
threats on the Internet and locally.
It would be interesting to see how beneficial, or not, all those
security software extensions are that get installed alongside
antivirus software. I would not be surprised if results came back that
they do more harm than provide use to users."

Is there good free AV software which does not phone home all the time,
does not nag users, does not install undesirable extras?

Nope. Windows, still have it, rarely use it.

Oh, my mistake, I thought you abandoned Windows altogether.

But guess who's gonna complain when their virus database is outdated?

If you absolutely don't want any kind of phone home, just turn it off. If it
has no such setting, then work around it. Use your firewall to block
outgoing connection from that software, or block the target site / IP
address.

> does not nag users,

I find it hard to find a free software (i.e. not a shareware/trialware) with
a nag screen. Not even a nag screen for a donation or ads (only Android apps
do that nowadays).

> does not install undesirable extras?

There are several but these extras are becoming a trend in nowadays
softwares. But most will give you the choice to install it or not.

If a software is provided as both install and portable version, choose the
portable one. However, portable version of an AV most likely means that it's
not an active AV.

Either way, don't simply click on OK/Yes buttons everytime you see them.
Ignorance is bliss, until it kills you.

http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-update

Download the database with a Linux boot CD, and save it to a
pendrive. Use that to update the AV.
+- 100MB is not too much. Most people use more than that with
Glugle talk, or Glugle listen, or whatever they call it.
	[]'s

PS The firewall is mandatory, if you want any privacy at all.
