#251020 — Gmail Backup

SubjectGmail Backup
Message-ID<1ea7ddb1-fdd3-4626-a9aa-52e5c469eefa@googlegroups.com>
I use Gmail and want to back it up. I want a complete backup. I want very strong compacting capabilities. If strong enough, store the Gmail somewhere in Google. It must be freeware. It must come with a very good tutorial.
Does that exist? Advise.

I guess I'm confused. Gmail saves your mail in the All Mail folder. Are you
wanting to back up your mail locally? If so, why bother? It's all there on
Google's server.

What Jeff says is true, but you could use an IMAP account, then you have
all your mail, both on your devices and on Googgle at the same time.

So you can read it when you're offline, that is if (like me) you turn
off your cable modem frequently.

I have my Gmail account set up as a POP3 on Thunderbird. Easy to do too.
I can still access it online as an IMAP though.

That article describes how to use Tb client with gmail pop OR imap. It
describes configuring gmail webmail for use as pop OR imap. It says
NOTHING about setting up pop AND imap.

It is normal to access gmail webmail online and also use a client such
as Tb as pop OR imap. You are saying you use it as both. Therefore I
say, "Whaaaat?"

Oh, thanks for the explanation. The reason I use both is because it
depends on whether or not I have TB open.

Not really a big thing IMO.

We still aren't communicating.

When you say 'depends on whether or not I have Tb open' you are
referring to using both/either webmail or Tb client.

That isn't what I am objecting to.

I'm objecting to your saying POP and IMAP. The gmail account is set as
one or the other. Any Tb account is one or the other. Not either/or.

It is most likely that you are configured for a Tb IMAP account and so
configured in the gmail webmail settings.

NOT POP.

So in that case the statement:

> I have my Gmail account set up as a POP3 on Thunderbird.

would be incorrect.

*OR*

It is also possible that you COULD have your gmail account set up as pop3.

In which case this statement would be incorrect:

> I can still access it online as an IMAP though.

You would have to say: "I can still access it online (PERIOD). Not add
'as an imap'.

*sigh* Mike, I sometimes leave my Gmail on the Google server and read it
by logging into my Gmail account in Firefox. That's IMAP.

Then sometimes I decide to download my email and store it on my hard
drive by using Thunderbird. That's POP3.
__________________________________________________________________________________
POP3 email services

The Post Office Protocol 3 (POP3) is a mail access protocol used by a
client application to read messages from the mail server. Received
messages are often deleted from the server. POP supports simple
download-and-delete requirements for access to remote mailboxes (termed
maildrop in the POP RFC's).[84]

IMAP email servers

The Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) provides features to manage
a mailbox from multiple devices. Small portable devices like smartphones
are increasingly used to check email while travelling, and to make brief
replies, larger devices with better keyboard access being used to reply
at greater length. IMAP shows the headers of messages, the sender and
the subject and the device needs to request to download specific
messages. Usually mail is left in folders in the mail server.

If you don't want to discuss it further, that is your prerogative.

You're saying that I can only use the account either as an IMAP or as a
POP3. Yes, I understand that I can only use it one way or the other in
Thunderbird, but that's not what I'm talking about. I use it as:
- an IMAP in FIREFOX
- as a POP3 in Thunderbird.

What's so hard to understand about that? What am I saying that's wrong here?

When you are using gmail's webmail with Ffx, you are NOT accessing as
imap or pop. When you are using gmail with your client Tb, you ARE
accessing as imap or pop.

When you access your gmail's webmail settings to ALSO be used with a
client such as Tb, you configure it to be so used as imap OR pop, not
'both'.

	:)
	I use TB with POP3.
Gmail recently changed their login policy. I have to use the
full "shadow@spyonme gmail com" as login. If I use just "shadow" they
put my account offline for 24hrs and tell me I've been hacked.
Buggers.

Fine, fine. Whatever. Seems to me that you're just splitting hairs
because you're itching for an argument though, frankly.

I also happen to use gmail's webmail and Tb client as IMAP.

In the past I have used gmail's webmail and Tb client as POP.

I believe IMAP is a better way for most situations.

And I believe otherwise. Opinions differ.

As always, you can't speak for others.

How brave of you to insult me like that through the anonymous media of
usenet.

So perhaps you can explain it to me. What then, am I accessing my Gmail
account as when I log into it via Firefox? What's the format then?
