I second the motion. I've been waiting for this. Installed it yesterday, and
it runs like the wind! Really excellent distro, IMO.

When I look at a distro, I want to see something that runs quickly and runs
the software I need. This one does very nicely.

Thanks, Mark, for mentioning it.

Would you recommend it a newbie?

BTW, just noticed a new SolydX(K) build. That looks like a really good
distro. However, it's low in Distrowatch's page ranking, which may not
mean a lot but could imply that not many users are interested in it. I
wonder why.

Yes. If nothing else, the forums make using it worthwhile.

The SolydXK project has had its ups and downs, but my understanding is
that things are now stabilized and it's proven to be a solid platform
for many.

Yes, that's an important point, a good forum/newsgroup for newbies.

I've tried SolydX a couple of times and it seems to be a very nice
distro. I'm not looking to switch distros at this time, but I like to
spin up a vm of various things to try them every so often.

I'm not really a KDE fan, so I didn't try that version.

What are your categories of linux distros? Typical vs atypical?

I don't think the question has meaning as stated, 'another typical'.

MX-15 is based on Debian stable, using XFCE as its default DE and is a
relative of anti-X developed with the Mepis community and supported with
numerous repositories for multimedia, mepis-deb mx, and also opera and
virtual box. So it is a rolling release.

So, it is typical and not-so-typical. It has a reputation for being
lighter weight than many and more stable than many others and speedier
than others.

Mike, I apologize for calling you "Mark" in another post. It's late, and
I'm senile...<grin>

Is MX-15 really a rolling release? Does this mean that, once I install it,
I won't ever have to install it again -- that updates will keep me current
forever? Or am I misunderstanding this?

anti-X is based on Debian which is rolling and is stated to be rolling.

I'm *assuming* that means that MX is ALSO rolling because it is also
anti-X and also based on Debian, albeit MX is on Debian stable and
anti-X parent is on Debian testing.

How well rolling releases 'hold up' has been the subject of some
investigation by Jesse Smith of DistroWatch. Last year he tested 5
rolling releases, PCLOS, openSUSE, Debian, Arch, and PC-BSD over a 5
week period and compared the experiences with each other.

http://distrowatch.com/weekly.php?issue=20141110#rolling

I think there are sufficient advantages and disadvantages to both/each
fixed vs rolling releases that neither type release strategy holds a
clear advantage. How subject one's rolling release distro is to
'breakage' is an important consideration.

Debian stable isn't rolling, so I don't think MX is rolling. The
migration notes for MX also seem to indicate it's not only not rolling
but that they don't care much about making it manageable to move from
one release to the next. For moving from an installed MX-15 beta 1 to
beta 2 is "Not recommended and not supported." And "From MX-14.4 to
MX-15: you're on your own!"

I use Gentoo, which rolls and years ago had a reputation for a lot of
breakage. I haven't had any breakage in years. I do have to pay
attention to news items delivered by the package manager, but they are
pretty good. From looking at non-rolling migration guides, I'd say the
pain is about equal, just spread out over time for me instead of coming
once or twice a year.

If you set Debian to update to "unstable" repos, it will
usually have the latest versions of software, to all effects, it is a
rolling release.
And as they point out in the guide, that will make it
windows-like, since it will have the most dep problems, "unintended"
security issues etc. So it will have bugs and occasionally need to be
hand-cranked to work. When they get fixed, they are shoved into
"testing".
So testing is also "rolling", but some software will not be up
to date.

https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-faq/ch-choosing.en.html

http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=debian

I'm currently running Debian LXDE wheezy with sloppy
backports, so my software is more or less up to date. But it is not
"rolling", it will keep to the wheezy repos.

http://backports.debian.org/Instructions/

	Was that complicated enough ?
	:)
	[]'s

PS I'm talking Debian here. Depending on how far a distro has
wandered away from the mother ship, it might not work. If I ran
Ubuntu, I would never use Debian repos. Re MX-15, dunno.

It will not. It will get updated through the Debian Jessie repos and
backports, and through the MX Community repos.

Well, I never fail to learn every time I ask a question here. Many thanks to
all. Avoid the "unstable" repos, stick with the repos that are enabled by
default in MX-15, and it looks like all be we well.

Because both Ubuntu and Fedora offers similar features, so I called this
MX15 "typical". :)
