If there is a _better_ way (i.e., more private) to check - please let us know! On reputation, there is a reason I quoted the Consumer Reports version of the news (there were many news articles on this topic), which is simply that a recommendation by Consumers Union is presumed, by some, to be "reputable". (We can hope anyway.) Likewise, there is a reason I mentioned using a sanctioned Tor Browser, where if you're not on iOS, you might not know that there is no "official" Tor Browser for iOS (so basically don't do the lookup on iOS is my recommendation). Similarly, there's a reason I suggested a specific official privacy-based browser, which is on all platforms (other than on iOS) in some guardian-approved manner. Note that, on "most" platforms other than on iOS, there are a few well-known well-respected "privacy browsers", such as: o Tor Browser Bundle <https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html> o Epic Privacy Browser <https://groups.google.com/d/msg/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/hqKijRgHOC0/vB3pH-sZAgAJ> o Opera VPN Browser <https://www.opera.com> There are others that "claim" to be privacy based - but I don't trust them: o Pragmatic experience with Freegate, Ultrasurf, and Polarity privacy-related web-surfing tools <https://groups.google.com/d/msg/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/oHuik0iDqcA/7GJlVUiyCgAJ> o Globus VPN Browser - new - but is it a gimmick - and where is it from? <https://groups.google.com/d/msg/microsoft.public.windowsxp.general/w9r9ZKTnBsg/UOqktdYNBAAJ> Lastly, there's a good reason, even after using the official Tor Browser Bundle, that I suggested you run only a single check per session. I am no privacy expert - so these are simply my ad-hoc off-the cuff recommendations just in case the haveibeenpwned web site is being watched, or if they are hacked, or if there is a nefarious intent of the admin. There are a lot of people on this thread who BENEFIT from those recommendations, so I would ask that folks like William Unruh, who bring up perfectly valid points, simply ASSUME that people _are_ using the method that was proposed in the opening post. My question I repeat, whose answer will benefit everyone, is whether you (plural) know of a BETTER way (i.e., more private) to check if you've been pwned than the method I initially proposed in the OP?

Wizard, *I realize you are a child who has _never_ written even a _single_ tutorial.* Hence, you attempt to debase those who have written thousands. *Clearly you play silly childish semantic games like an armchair QB does.* o I understand you have absolutely no knowledge of the subject matter. o I also understand you have absolutely zero helpful intent. o And, I realize that you post on Usenet merely for your own amusement. Since you, Cybe R Wizard, will _never_ add value to _any_ topic, I'm going to take this opportunity to further our goals of creating a cross platform home-LAN-based passwd management system for all common consumer platforms. To that end, today I tested these Android password managers, posting the results to the Android newsgroup for their review: o Which free Android KeePass kdbx-compatible password database manager do you recommend? <https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/yUrCZ2v0tmg> Here is that post, which I ask you Cybe R Wizard, to *add value* to. (If you can't add any value - please act like an adult if you respond.) While iOS comes native with a password manager, Android does not (AFAIK). Installing a KeePass-compatible password manager is easy though. *The question, always, is "which one" is a good password manager?* I don't know (yet) which is a good password manager to recommend. (Yes, I know Poutnik recommends "KeePass2Android", but even that recommendation has issues because multiple KP2A variants exist.) As you're likely aware, we can easily copy the master Windows-based encrypted kdbx file from a Windows share using an SMB client over WiFi on the home LAN, as per this method: o Do you know of a free Android SMBv2 (or SMBv3) client? <https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/comp.mobile.android/tl3Q05QGyAw> <https://comp.mobile.android.narkive.com/VME2QHVh/do-you-know-of-a-free-android-smbv2-or-smbv3-client> Hence, it's now time to test the next step, that of an Android passwd manager that reads the encrypted Windows KDBX file format. Today I briefly tested 8 freeware kdbx-compatible password managers. (Did I miss any?) Here is my first-pass ordering, from best to worst, but the order below is very preliminary because the evaluation is simply based on a single read of a Windows encrypted kdbx file on Android Nougat 7.0 today. o *KeePass DX* - <https://www.f-droid.org/en/packages/com.kunzisoft.keepass.libre/> - <https://github.com/Kunzisoft/KeePassDX> - <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kunzisoft.keepass.free> o Passed the test of reading the Windows encrypted kdbx file. o *Keepass2Android Password Safe* - <https://www.f-droid.org/forums/topic/keepass2android/> - <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=keepass2android.keepass2android> o Passed the test of reading the Windows encrypted kdbx file. o *KeePassDroid* - <https://f-droid.org/en/packages/com.android.keepass/> - <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.android.keepass> o Passed the test of reading the Windows encrypted kdbx file. o *TinyKeePass* - <https://f-droid.org/en/packages/org.sorz.lab.tinykeepass/> o Passed the test of reading the Windows encrypted kdbx file. o *Keepass2Android Offline* - <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=keepass2android.keepass2android_nonet> o Passed the test of reading the Windows encrypted kdbx file. o *Password Safe - Secure Password Manager* - <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.reneph.passwordsafe> o Failed as it would only import plaintext CSV but not encrypted KDBX files. o *Kaspersky Password Manager & Secure Data Vault* - <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kaspersky.passwordmanager> o This asks for too many permissions (e.g., to make phone calls) o Failed as it apparently required a login account - so it was deleted. o *LastPass Password Manager* - <https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lastpass.lpandroid> o Failed as it required a log in so it was not tested (and was deleted) Note: There is also a Windows/Linux/Mac KeePassX & KeyPassXC o <https://www.keepassx.org/downloads> o <https://github.com/keepassxreboot/keepassxc> o Not tested on Android (dunno if an Android port exists). I don't have _any_ experience with password managers on Android. Do you? If you have experience with any of these password managers, please impart your wisdom for us to benefit from. For example: a. Did I miss any major players? b. What distinguishes the best from the standard? c. Which, in your experience, serves your needs best (and why?) As always, this thread is written to learn from others, and to disseminate what I've learned, and hence to combine our tribal knowledge so that we all benefit from every thread by purposefully helping each other.

No, really, I want to know what makes you think that calling someone a child as opposed to an adult is some sort of insult. And that calling someone an adult is some sort of compliment. FYI, it doesn't work with me. From my POV it makes you look strangely obsessed with wanting to be acknoweldged as having some kind of higher status. My guess is that somewhere along the line someone must have impressed on you that being an adult is some sort of superior state or station in life. It isn't, you know. It's just a different stage. What matters is what sort of adult you are. It seems your sort of adult is someone who doesn't engage in "childish semantic games, or idle chit-chat, etc". IOW, someone who thinks adults aren't supposed to play. Whoever taught you that was evil. They've robbed you one of the few things that make life worth living. Hardly Holdin, It seems to me that calling you out on your lies is of very great and adult value in a group that wants truth (as most 'technical' groups do), and doing so is fairly on-topic in an English-speaking group of any stripe as truth is not always easily discerned by non-English (as first language) speakers. So, technically, you're once again wrong. It may also interest you to know that this group (alt.os.linux) is NOT a technical group nor a help group nor a Mac, Android or Windows group. It is for discussion of the Linux operating system. Indeed, I do not find the term, "technical," or even, "help," in the names of any of the many groups to which you crosspost your own drivel. Therefore... Are you aware that the term, "passwd," does NOT stand for or in any way replace the term, "password?" It is a /LINUX TOOL/ used to /CHANGE/ a user's password. (BTW, that's some of that technical, adult, and on-topic help for you. Live it, love it, learn it) Your use of it to substitute for, "password," just goes to point out your own dire lack of knowledge of most things Linux. Do you even use Linux in any capacity? You seem danged ignorant of it if so. I know this because I /AM/ a long-time user of Linux exclusively and, while not an expert, I am moderately competent, at least insofar as keeping my own system and those of That Danged Wife, her business and Elder Daughter working and up-to-date. Can you say the same? Surely not. Speaking of adult, off-topic and of technical valueless-ness, have you audited your own posts that concern themselves mainly with insulting those who disagree with your oddball opinions? Now, /THOSE/ are decidedly off-topic in ANY group, but we all know that your highness can do no wrong. Oh, no! Cybe R. Drat, as an USian I am trying to get used to using the Oxford comma but sometimes still let ambiguity slip in. That should have been: ---------- "I am moderately competent, at least insofar as keeping my own system and those of That Danged Wife, her business, and Elder Daughter working and up-to-date." ---------- Cybe R. Wizard -- I just want to keep improving, to keep getting better. Kawhi Leonard

Hi Cybe R Wizard, Moving on to the second reputed SMB server in the iOS list... o FE File Explorer: File Manager <https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/fe-file-explorer-file-manager/id510282524> 1. First, I tested Android & Windows on both SMBv1 & SMBv2 shares. 2. Then I started FE File Explorer on iOS 3. I pressed the + button in the top left (to the right of "File Explorer") 4. A "New Connection" form comes up 5. I pressed the "Windows" icon 6. I filled out the "New Connection" form Display name = smbv1 Host Name/IP = 192.168.1.10 DNS Domain = blank Path = blank Port = 445 Show Hidden Files = off Show Admin Shares = off Support DFS = off Connect as User Name = arlen Password = arlen 7. I hit "Save" 8. The "Smbv1" button showed up under "Connections" at bottom left 9. I pressed the "Smbv1" button & the "public" share shows up on the right 10. I pressed the "public" button, and the share contents show up perfectly I then attempt to repeat the test with the smbv2 share. The error is "Upgrade to Pro Version" "The Pro version can access more than one computer or NAS, manage files on network shares, and play more movie formats (AVI, MKV, XVID, etc)." OK. No big deal. I delete the "Smbv1" share and enter the information for the SMBv2 share. There is no error but the spinning wheel spins for a minute or two and then it errors out with:"Error" "Connection failed with the error: Connection timeout" It appears that the iOS "FE File Explorer: File Manager" beautifully supports SMBv1 shares, but that it doesn't support SMBv2 shares.
