I have an ancient workstation built from my second ever motherboard (a 
PII) running Debian that I use for cd-mastering/archival and also for 
forensics or recovery involving older media such as ide hard drives, 
Iomega JAZ/Zip.  It doesn't have a 5-1/4" installed, but could be 
installed in a few minutes.  I also have a 3.5" Superdisk drive that 
could be swapped for the conventional 3.5", but I haven't tested it yet, 
but possibly it's just more ephemera from before flash drives.

I've been using the frontend program ripperX to rip to WAV and/or MP3 
ever since it branched from "Grip".  Grip was using the project 
"cdparanoia" to rip to WAV after getting the CD table-of-contents info 
with cdrdao or some similar utility and query a CDDB server to get 
artist, album, and track name info and then rip everything to the 
directory/file structure and naming you wanted. 

The problem with ripperx, is that it doesn't easily support multiple CD 
drives.  I have two.  I also find GUI to be the most unwieldy way to do 
something that I want to "set and forget" like a long ripping/jitter-
correction/encoding process.

I did write wrapper scripts for ripperx that would just shuffle the 
.ripperx config file between two setups but that was short-lived.  I 
accidentally nuked the scripts by typing an "rm *" carelessly in the 
wrong directory, thinking that I was in another terminal.  The .config 
files survived, so I might resurrect those eventually.

I yearned for back in the day when I had some command-line scripts that 
were just "read_cd" and "write_cd" and they used cdrdao and cdparanoia to 
make an exact copy of the CD, but also add in encoding to mp3.

It seems that all that I have left to add is the mp3/ogg/whatever 
encoding portion.  I'll be adding in mp3 first with consideration that 
there may be other formats/encoders.  I will also need to break out a few 
vars into a dedicated .config file before I start that in preparation for 
the "multiple encoders" stage, which will require a somewhat involved 
"config parsing" function once those are added.

I started it I few weeks back, and now have written a PHP library to read 
and write TOC files for CD_DA format and a wrapper script to rip a cd 
with command line flags for which device to use and what directory to rip 
to, etc.

For writing CDs, I have a similar wrapper script that has switches for 
device and TOC filename to use for writing the CD.

Right now I'm ripping XTC / Live in Concert using the 24 year old SCSI CD 
writer that I used to use for this same stuff way back in the day.

Great to hear!

GNU/Linux is all about DIY and it offers many tools for many jobs.

I've used cdparanoia/cdda2wav to rip many CDs that were borrowed from
public libraries.  Many of the CDs were horribly abused but cdparanoia/cdda2wav
ripped them all without problem.

You may want to consider using Tcl/Tk to produce a simple GUI wrapper.
Cdda2wav contains a huge amount of processing options and a GUI layout
would make selecting options much easier than having to scroll through
the lengthy man page.

A utility wrapper script shouldn't need a man page cluttering up the place.  The applications being used for "heavy lifting" have man pages.  A utility wrapper should have "Usage:" information shown with the -h or --help command line flags, IMO, which is what my script will have once I add the "final touches".

If I want to put a CD in my CD drive and type "rip_cd" and hit enter and then go do whatever I want to, why would I need or want to interact with a GUI?  I sure as fuck would not use tcl for any GUI that I would want others to want to use.  I'd use GTK+ so it wouldn't look/feel like a broken-down old relic unless I was trying to run it on a 386.

The CDDB portion of the cdrdao wav extraction process is already annoying me because it stops to ask for input when it finds the disc in the database, and so I still have to see if I can bypass that with a cdrdao cmd line flag or just pipe the char "1" to the process so that it gets grabbed from the buffer and the first selection is always chosen.

I wrote it in BASH and PHP-cli.  I've always felt that the effectiveness and utility of a cross-platform scripting language like PHP is/has been massively under-looked.  PHP-Gtk has been around for a long time and is pretty cool.  I've used it to make a Windows GUI for a repetitive task that was prone to user error when making deliverable archives of data before they finally settled on a commercial LIMS product.

Perhaps I'll eventually get around to using some of the code I've written for this PHP usenet client that I wrote to make an open-source GUI client that can handle UTF-8 properly without falling apart and maybe it'll kick-start people to create some other new clients instead of so many people using old broken clients that I am fairly certain have security "features", having not been maintained for 25 years.

UPDATE:
Piping "echo 1 | $CDRDAO_READ_TOC_COMMAND" fixed the user input prompt issue perfectly.

I might add a command line option in my getopt() definition string to change the behavior to stop at the prompt, if desired.

I'm running another test run now after changing the name of the silent lead-in file that cdparanoia generates to "00 Lead-in.wav" so that it will be automatically named sensibly and appear as the first track.

I'm looking at the "LAME" mp3 encoder options currently so that I can hard-code my preferred options as the defaults and add the cmd line options after.  Hopefully have that added soon.
