Since when do lenses and mirrors use any energy other than the light that

Tiny little motors. You can use microsteppers, ac synchronous or dc
digital servo (brushed or brushless). Big thing is smooth and accurate
so huge ass ac induction motors are out and little motors under 10 watts
with closed loop positioning driven by PWM H-bridges are in. Very
efficient.

Some people like the hand crank interface, so you can build a quadrature
encoder driven velocity register into the software, if that's what you like.

Oh, radio telescopes....those use a LOT of energy. Cryogenic cooling and all
that.

How do you think those lenses and mirrors were created in the first place?

Magic?

The problem with measuring a product in terms of the water or gasoline used to make it is that if there is any amortizing going on, you ignore it.

Don't use long words like "amortizing" around Scout -- it confuses him.

We have to assume we aren't. If we are, we're screwed. If we aren't, but
we do nothing until we are, we're screwed. The only chance of not being
screwed is to not do nothing about it.

I don't think we'd be totally screwed... maybe just the head is in.
Here's an interesting article that says the earth was headed towards
another ice age, and global warming has stopped that from happening, at
least for now:

explainer/7185002>

Here's an excerpt for Greg, since he doesn't know how to copy and paste a
long link:

"Are we due for another ice age?
Based on previous cycles the Earth is probably due to go into an ice age
about now. In fact, conditions were starting to line up for a new ice age
at least 6,000 years ago.

"If you look at what was happening prior to the industrial revolution,
summers were actually getting colder in the northern hemisphere. They've
been getting colder for at least the last 6,000 years, so we were
definitely on that trend," Dr Phipps said.

But that trend has now been comprehensively reversed because of
greenhouse gas emissions, according to Dr Phipps.

"There's no chance of us going into an ice age now because the greenhouse
gases we've put into the atmosphere during the industrial era have warmed
the earth."

Although scientists cannot say we have definitely prevented the next ice
age, it's certainly accepted that humans have had a significant part to
play."

I'll take a little global warming over another ice age any day...
