Thanks for the trivia. I've flown in/out of JFK and La Guardia several times each during my enlistment. Never had an inkling JFK had been renamed! Yeah, I didn't think it was likely that anyone would have known that, so I thought I'd pass that along, since Idlewild was referred to so many times in the episode, and someone might wonder where exactly are they trying to fly to. I'm watching that episode now, and only at 4 mins in, I get a great Nostalgia Boost. "Better call Weather Ship Charlie!" says the 'skipper'. Wow, they are on a transatlantic flight from the UK to the US (Idlewild). The Boeing 747 was the first civilian airliner to open up most of Europe to non-stop trans-oceanic flight from the US. And they still fly over parts of the Arctic region to get to UK, France, east Europe. It is just the shortest route. While most flights we actually talked with over the RT net were MAC flights, a few were civilian airliners. They are raising Ocean (Weather) Station Charlie, one part of my first "cruise" on the USCGC Taney, a double patrol, a Bravo-Charlie. The first 27 days were the OS Bravo, near the Arctic circle, then the rest was on OS Charlie, then back to port. 78 days out total. Total number of aircraft observed, 60, total number we logged comms with, 3. This was in 73, Loran C was now in global use, not much need for a vessel between continents at that point. The Ocean Stations were, well, obsolete. Redundant. Overkill. Purposeless. A waste of money. We stood the last Charlie, actually. Taney also stood the very last Ocean WEATHER Station HOTEL, east coast. There is now a permanent sea buoy with its own automated weather observatory. So, all this in our little lifetimes, Spamster! I was in 3rd (9 yrs old) grade when JFK was killed. The worst part is that it was shown school-wide on all classrooms TV's live. The entire Galena Park School District was witness to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, via live broadcast of the event. Most schools across the nation likely experienced the same thing. So that was probably THE event that sparked the 10 second broadcast delay being inserted into all "Live" broadcasting we see today. Means that if we see it, they LET it "slip" in. Odyssey of Global 33, now that was an unbuttoned ending! A Rod Serling Special, Whew! McG. Just remembered (though it isn't in any shows to date), Houston Intercontinental Airport was renamed to George Bush, or just BUSH, Intercontinental Airport. I don't recall the exact year or reason, but they sure did it. Seems I had kids, so was out of the Military by then. McG. I didn't know that, but it would seem obvious that the original name was not Bush. I haven't watched this episode yet but that's a cool bit of trivia.
