Hi, I am using TimeMachine on my mac since 10 Years and it helped me out of some trouble. For a small business runing a pc with Windows 7, I am searching for a similary programm. This program should - work on more than one backup target (e.g. 3 rotating USB-HDDs) - should not take care which target is connected to the computer - clean up target drives by deleting older backups - enable complete restores for each time a file was backed up. - easy setup and allmost no interaction if once configured. I tried acronis and nova backup - both fail at some of the points. A big problem seems to be, the order of targets. Acronis wants to have a certain tape for a certain job, so I have to configure 3 jobs and have to make shure, the right target is connected for the job. With TimeMachine this doesn't matter. If any of the targets is connected, the backup is running. Any ideas Thanks dirk

Richard Lechner <r.lechner@gmx.net> wrote: > Cobian + write data on every target, which contains the target folder. - does not create a full backup on a new target, but only on the target connected at the very first time the job was performed. So if this target-media gets corrupted, the backup is broken, even if all the other targets are fine. - creates a separate folder for each incremental backup, which contains only the data backed up at this time. TimeMachine creates hard links in every backup-folder, so if you open a folder, you have access to all the files at this timestamp. -- there is no build-in restore tool. And if I read the comments right: There won't be one in the future. So if I am searching for a certain file to restore, i have to search it manually in a lot of folders on a lot of targets... So this programm gave a good first impression, but failed later. It may work for a "geek", but not for a simple user... Ciao dirk BTW: This is almost the same behavior as NovaBackup does - except for the restore part.

If you use always the same folder its all there.... I use full and differntial backups and it cleans up every 2 month. rsync style like back in time: http://www.lupinho.net/hardlinkbackup/

I used to use Retrospect for Windows. It was very good, I did many
bare metal restores with this product. I don't know if it is still
good. The company hosts forums which were, back in the day, a good
source of info about software defects.
Retrospect calls its TimeMachine-like feature "progressive backup" I
think.

Retrospect on OSX Server - it's a nightmare! Hanging jobs for weeks, wrong days, broken databases, asf.... Never see a broken software like this pice of sh...!

I used Retrospect for Windows and for Mac a decade or more ago for backing up my pre timemachine Mac OS and my Windows PC on a DAT drive but I never tried backing up to HDD. I will get the demo and give it a try, since I am not fully sattisfied with the other software mentioned... Ciao dirk

Per Dirk Wagner: >I used Retrospect for Windows and for Mac a decade or more ago for >backing up my pre timemachine Mac OS and my Windows PC on a DAT drive >but I never tried backing up to HDD. > >I will get the demo and give it a try, since I am not fully sattisfied >with the other software mentioned... How about reporting back? I too used it on my Macs and, early after the port to Windows used the Windows version. What I liked the most was one-stop shopping for backed-up file: it would show all versions of that file in a single list. Then they rewrote it - losing that killer feature and other wise degrading the application. Maybe they have regained their senses by now.... -- Pete Cresswell

Dirk Wagner <usenet.NOSPAM@diwasoft.de> wrote: > I will get the demo and give it a try, since I am not fully sattisfied > with the other software mentioned... The backup seems to be working as I it shound - even on multiple targets if they are defined in advance. But restoring is terrible. It's the same concept they use 15 years ago. No way to see the different versions of a file... Ciao dirk
