Doing the jobs that Americans don't want anyway.

Farmers complain of worker shortages
Oct. 25, 2015

Labor shortages across the U.S. have forced some farmers to
take extreme measures.

California farmers have long relied on immigrants to tend to
their crops, a tradition that for decades has formed part of
the state's cultural identity.

The farm labor movement extends as far back as the early 1960s,
when civil rights activist Cesar Chavez mobilized thousands of
Latino farm workers in California to fight for better working
conditions.

That tradition continues today, with foreign-born workers
accounting for the vast majority of the country's agricultural
laborers. The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that
half are unauthorized immigrants.

Now, this once-reliable source of labor appears to be dwindling,
the result of less migration from Mexico and an aging farm worker
population, among other complex factors. Domestic-born workers
are unwilling to take their place, according to agricultural
experts.

There is no reason to use illegal labor to pick US crops. Australia converted to mechanized harvesting years ago with no ill effect that i know of.

Not all crops are amenable to mechanical harvesting.

That aside, I would invite you to a taste test. Take a mass-produced
and mechanically harvested tomato and compare it to a small-batch
heritage variety that was picked by hand. Then repeat the experiment
with apples.

Notice the difference?

That is the price we pay.

There are still crops for which mechanical harvesting still can't be
made to work. Things that ripen at different times. Or things too
delicate.

That depends on the crops. If US farmers
could switch to just machines they would have
done so long ago. As it is the "wets" are still
in high demand.

That depends whether the taxpayer saves overall.

It's hard to see how the taxpayer can benefit from paying the
transportation distribution expenses for unskilled workers.

The moment transport costs are lower than the cost to social security
programmes, it's a net gain to the taxpayer. If I can save $1,000 in
food stamps and unemployment benefits by spending $500 on a plane
ticket, I'll take that deal.

If you pay into the system, you acquire the right to draw on it in time
of need.

IT may be a mandatory system, but it still works along the same
principles as insurance. If you take out a healthcare policy today and
you break your leg next month, you still get the money even though you
haven't fully paid in the cost of treatment.

I said unearned. Things like Medicaid and Social Security for anyone
who did not work to earn the income. Food stamps. Any other welfare
payments.

I am aware of how it works. Basically it is like any other Ponzi
scheme except participation is mandated by law.

How about public schools? Children certainly
don't work, so their education is an "unearned
benefit", no?
