Indeed... I retired last year (YEAH!) and gf and me are planning a very
long trip to Europe. Since I developed a fear of flying some years ago,
we'll be taking the boat! NY to Southampton, quite probably. So Scotland
is pretty much in the plans!

Don't know when, though, gf is *not* retiring soon!

If the fear of flying is truly debilitating, that is a good option --
especially as a start to a retirement.

On the downside, trains in the UK are not exactly what you would expect
in a first-world nation. They are about as bad as in the US....

Oh, and while planning for your trip, do also look at cruises around the
Mediterranean -- I've had friends and family go on some of them, and
they can be a seriously tempting way to see Europe.

To be sure!
Up the Rhine or down the Danube -- excellent ways of seeing Europe in
utter comfort. I have seen river cruise ships with hot tubs and
swimming pools on the upper decks...

Indeed. Some friends of ours take cruises at least once a year; they're
a great source of tips. Also, if you go off-season and do not insist on
the Queen's Deluxe Suite, US-UK cruises are relatively inexpensive. Last
I check, one could book a simple room for 1300$ US. That's quite
reasonable since in includes transport (obviously), room and board.

It must be said that they have had a bit of a bad press here in the UK,
owing to a couple f widely publicised outbreaks of disease on board such
ships to and from the US. The latest, I believe, involves the Norovirus
which caused the toilet system on board to fail....

That said, I do think that taking a ship would be a lovely start to a
brilliant trip. And if you keep a close eye on prices, you should be
ale to snag a special deal that would see you travel in the style and
comfort you desire and deserve at affordable prices. The market is so
competitive these days that smaller ships have been forced to offer huge
discounts just to fill up the berths.

For your return from Edinburgh, I can recommend the sleeper train to
London. Unlike American Pullman cars (now extinct), the beds are
oriented athwart, so the natural side-to-side railroad sway does not
threaten to pitch you sideways into the aisle, but is rather soothing.
Best night's sleep in motion I've ever had.

You pull into London at 7:00 a.m. and have an hour to dress, etc. and
leave your compartment. Very civilized.

We are always ready to sample the native food. In the East End is
this not fish and chips?

True traditional East End food would be pie & mash, jellied eels, cockles
and winkles. NB, Those last two are shellfish, not euphemisms.
In earlier times, oysters were the food of the poor.

There are still a traditional few pie & mash shops around, but they aren't
very popular nowadays.

Fish and chip establishments tend to be 'take aways', but I do know of one
good sit-down fish and chip restaurant.

Of course, it is entirely appropriate these days to have that other
traditional food of the English: a curry.

Of course, it is always fun to order a vindaloo or a phaal for
unsuspecting tourist friends or family, and watch their faces turn
interesting shades of white and red....

I'll never forget eating in an Indian restaurant, watching as the guy
sitting at the table opposite to us turned scarlet, mopped the sweat off
of his face several times and failed to finish even half of the dish he
had ordered. The waiter even warned him how hot it was when he ordered.
