A couple of years ago, a museum in DC had an exhibit on race that made
the interesting point that had a Dane or a Brit _walked_ south through
Europe and Africa, he would probably not notice much in the line of
races. People he passed would gradually get darker and darker as he
approached the equator--he'd probably be more aware of changes in the
foods than in the people.
But let him board ship in Copenhagen or Portsmouth and _sail_ to
Senegal, and wow! would he ever see black people!

In Edinburgh during the administration of Dubya, I was asked if I were
a Canadian. I admitted to being an American and apologized for our
president. They treated me very well indeed there.
