This is an aa thread for atheists only, as per all the alt.atheism FAQs. Lurker atheists are welcome. PLEASE DON'T FEED THE TROLLS. I know it's hard, since they deliberately ask upsetting questions or lie about us, but please try. I'm trying, too, and it ain't easy. #28. If you were going to be religious, what religion would you be and why? No made up religions and no flames, please.

If I could find a Buddhist group to join that wouldn't be theist or heavily into stuff like reincarnation, that might be nice. I like Quakers, and their meetings, in my few experiences with them, tend to be very low-key and only mildly wacky. And the Quakers I know are lovely, non-judgmental, liberal people at peace with themselves, each other and the world. Wouldn't mind that a bit. Any of those would do. I could even stomach returning to the Episcopal church, if I could find a liberal congregation in a progressive diocese. Towards the end of my time in the church, I found ways to put non-superstitious spins on the dogma and liturgy of the services that satisfied me; and I quite like the ceremony and history of the church. The things I couldn't tolerate would be anything that really pushed anything supernatural or superstitious, including god or an afterlife; or anything judgmental of powerless or oppressed people. All that said, I'm not sure why I'd want to return to religion, except for cover if things got really nasty for atheists; nasty in a way I couldn't fight, that is. Like 'convert or I'll shoot you in the head'. Like that.

No, not for the naked dancing in the woods, but because at least those faiths refer back to something existing and because by all accounts these are relatively benign religions that encourage a more conscious behaviour and attitude towards the environment we all live in.

Your point? -- JD Being open-minded is merely the willingness to consider evidence, not the willingness to accept claims without any.
