If rabbis say you should never lie under any circumstances IMO they are both wrong and stupid for the reasons I have already stated. There can be times when it is moral to not tell the truth.

My favorite example would be to lie. Assume you are hiding friends who happen to be Jewish in 1944 Germany and the Gestapo comes to your house and asks if you know of any jews hiding out. If you say yes, they die. If you say no there is a chance they might not be found and you will have saved lives. The morally correct choice is to tell the truth unless it would put an innocent person in danger and cause them bodily harm or worse. If follow the rule, "speak truth to those you owe truth." Kevin R

The boy who cried wolf is an excellent example of why lying might not be a good idea, and yes I know that it is a much newer story that the 10 commandments, but people were surely aware of the same danger before the 10 commandments. Then, the chance of you lying about someone who might later be needed, to tell the truth about you and then gets revenge by lying about you. No god is required to determine a decent moral code.

I would never lie to an authority in regards to my neighbor, even if i hated my neighbor (or whoever the target may be) -- do you find that surprising? You see, I do not require the assistance of state tyranny so that i may taste the sweet nectar of revenge. No, i can do that me-self. But don't get all excited just yet. In fact, there are many parallels between the "moral systems" of atheists and you fear mongering little god-bots (did i just say that???). For instance, just because you discovered something as useful as fire, does not mean we will refuse to use fires to warm our food. A good idea is a good idea, even *IF* it was first documented by a dirty goat herder! You might also be surprised to find out that most of us are opposed to killing other sentient lifeforms (although many, including myself, would add the caveat of "without a good reason"). So, in conclusion, the only thing you have proven here is your own fear of disbelief. I am content being an atheist. Are you content being a theist?
