The original Hollywood blacklisting was an outcome of McCarthyism, named
after the paranoid Republican senator from Wisconsin who believed that
Communists had infiltrated the U.S. government, media and entertainment,
and were hiding under every bed in America.

But you are correct that these days Hollywood blacklists rightists. But
unlike the original McCarthyism, which targeted leftists, there does not
seem to be any government pressure to do so. Hollywood and the rest of
the American infotainment industry, advertising industry, etc. wields
far more power over public opinion than government. The current
presidential election resembles a cross between the "Jerry Springer"
show and "Bum Fights." The "blacklisted" actors are being punished
less for their personal ideological beliefs than their refusal to
play the role they've been assigned in a fake reality show.
